Our song of the week (04/01) for this Thursday is Too Good by Arlo Parks. This song came out of her Collapsed in Sunbeams album in 2021. Fresh song we got right here. This song righteously sits in the R&B category. It’s got a hint of indie in it too. You can find this song on all streaming platforms.
Best scenario for this song to be played: When you need some faith and a good voice to give it to you. ( You have to listen to the song to understand this one.)
Lyrics
The air was fragrant and thick with our silence
I held my breath as something deep inside pinched
I touched the bump on your wrist you were born with
It hurts when you see it coming
You’re too proud to tell me that you care
Watching you trying to push away
It hurts when you see it coming
Never use your words to show you care
Too cool to show it
Babe, you’re so good
You’re too good to be true
I think you know it
Too cool to show it
Babe, you’re so good
You’re too good to be true
Why do we make the simplest things so hard?
And start to pick at the rips in my Nikes
You quote Thom Yorke and lean in for a quick kiss
But still you just won’t admit that you like me
It hurts when you know it’s over
Still too stubborn to show that you care
Watching you lower both your eyes
It hurts when you know it’s over
I feel like you never really cared
-Too cool to show it
-Babe, you’re so good
-You’re too good to be true x4
Why do we make the simplest things so hard?x2
Sunspots in your eyes, dark green
You still mean the world to me
Ohh
Why do we make the simplest things so hard? x2
ARLO PARKS. ARLO PARKS. Amazing. I could end the blog post right here and my point would be proven. Were going to talk a little about this song, but I also just want to showcase Arlo’s talent. I don’t think I uplift or talk about female artists on this blog, especially WOC ( Women of Color) as much as I’d like to. So today I’m going to do that.
This song is great and it sounds so poetic. Arlo is a singer-songwriter-poet from England. This song didn’t just come out of any album, but her DEBUT album. This album and this song especially showcases her talent in the best light possible.
Arlo is only twenty years old and has such a soothing voice. She could tell me anything and I’d be like okay I’ll do it. This song is lyrically impressive, and feels like a soft pillow. I can’t truly describe how well this sounds. I just suggest you listen to it yourself.
Alright now let’s talk a little about what this song means. From listening to it, the meaning behind it is kind of a story. A story about a couple or relationship that doesn’t get far because one person doesn’t allow it, even though they might just be a perfect match. When they start to “fall” or “care” they push away.
Arlo herself literally says this in the song too. ” Watching you trying to push away, It hurts when you see it coming, Never use your words to show you care.” See. Instead of healthy communication, the person can feel strong feelings coming on and decide to self sabotage as some would see it and retract.
Arlo also says ” I think you know it, Too cool to show it, ” That person knows they’re pulling away, but won’t admit it. “Too cool to show it.” It’s common that when things are getting serious some people will pull back. It’s an unhealthy habit, but normal.
I feel like in this situation Arlo comes in with some reassurance saying “Babe, you’re so good, You’re too good to be true.” Kind of reminding that person that I think you’re great, this is great, etc etc.
Arlo also uses lyrics saying ” Still too stubborn to show that you care”, ” I feel like you never really cared”. The person that she’s talking about seems to struggle to show any real emotion or empathy. It’s a bad habit this person seems to have. This shows maybe how complicated this relationship is because you have one side that thinks the person is cool and good for them, but the other person is being very closed off and scared to be vulnerable.
Arlo says at the end of the song ” Sunspots in your eyes, dark green, You still mean the world to me”. Even after this person is being closed off and has their walls up, she’s not leaving. They still mean something to her.
The last lyric I want to talk about is when Arlo says ” Why do we the simplest things so hard”. Only thing I have to say about this lyric is to live by it. If life seems hard or things seem to be difficult, do one thing, simplify the problem and then ask yourself why you’re making it so hard. ( If you do this, let me know how it works out). Hopefully it’ll put you at ease.
Arlo soothes this song and our hearts with her voice and I couldn’t love it more. This song is special because it’s our last!
Next week will be my last entry and the playlist will be put out. I’m going to make it on spotify and every song I reviewed in this blog will be on there. I plan on adding a few more that we didn’t get to touch on in it too. If there’s anything you’d like to see on the playlist that fits the genres, feel free to comment below!
Tell me what you think about Arlo and this song. Until next week :).
