Lyrics
I never use my brain
I only use my heart
And my imagination
I always make mistakes
And I never say I’m sorry
‘Cause there mistakes that I made
I’ve never seen the world
And I haven’t quite decided
If I’m a boy or a girl
I’m afraid of the dark
But I’m obsessed with ideas
One day I’ll go far
And everything has changed
There’s nothing in my heart
And lightning in my brain
And hear what I say
Don’t listen to your brain
And follow your dreams (I say)Let’s be honest. You’ve probably heard this song from Tik Tok and that’s okay. Good music is good music, no matter where you heard it first. I particularly like this song because of the melody it has. It also has a very somber/reminiscent tone to it. For someone listening to it who’s older it can be seen as nostalgic, remembering those memories when you were just a kid yourself. It’s a good song if you want to get deep with it and do some self reflection.
Were going to be talking more about what the lyrics mean of how it was created this time. It’s easy to interpret this song in any way, so here’s mine.As much as this song can give off a reminiscent tone, it’s also good for reminders. For example, the second and third verse. Now we know every once in a while someone’s telling you to follow your heart, when your mind and heart are a a crossroad. Nick is saying the same thing here. ” I never use my brain, I only use my heart”. Sometimes, it’s a good reminder that just because you’re an adult, you don’t have to make brainy decisions every time. Sometimes using your heart will put you in a better predicament. You listen to that verse and think, kids don’t use their brain as much, but then you also think, well how much do I use my heart?
In the beginning, Nick talks about being a kid and normal kid stuff, like being afraid of the dark, and not knowing who you are. I bolded where he said ” And I’m obsessed with ideas, one day I’ll go far”. Be honest, we all once were kids who wanted to grow up fast and do this that and the other. Nick is right. We were all kids who were moving too fast.
He then goes on to sing ” I’m no longer a kid and everything has changed”. It’s not about what he says, but the way he says it. He says it in a regretful tone, like “Damn, I’m not a kid anymore and it sucks”. He also says it in tone, of like “Wow it happened so fast”. Take some time to look back and see how much you’ve changed since being a kid. It can be easy to just keep growing without noticing that we are.
He then follows to sing ” There’s nothing in my heart, and lightning in my brain”. Maybe there’s nothing fulfilling in his adult life compared to when he was a kid. It’s truly different for everyone, but sometimes the creativity, passion and excitement does fade as you get older. This song serves as a reminder for the young ones to not let that happen.
Don’t grow up too fast because best believe you’ll miss it. At the end of the song Nick tells the current kids to listen up and not to listen to their brain, but follow their dreams. That’s a good way to end this song. I feel like he goes through the stages of grief in this song and at the end, you get that acceptance, that your not a kid anymore, but you can still help the ones that are…
Current Joys doesn’t disappoint. What did you think?
Next week’s song will be Gravity by Brent Faiyaz featuring Tyler the Creator, so go give it a listen.
Hi Arieal!
I really like the concept of your blog and how you go through songs and give your own interpretations of them. I specifically like how you acknowledge that everyone will have their own interpretations of a song and that that’s okay. I’ll admit, I have never heard this song before, but I would say that I definitely agree with your interpretation. The song definitely gives me more somber and reminiscent vibes and I like that you bolded out the certain parts of the lyrics to point them out. I also really liked how you ended your post talking about the end of the song and how they both end on a bitter-sweet note. Great job!
