One thing that has always been prevalent in any political argument is the support or contradiction of the Second Amendment: the right to keep and bear arms. On one side, an individual may believe that they have a right to own a gun and a right to protect themselves. The opposing party believes that there would be no one to protect yourself against if guns were not available to purchase. Either way, it’s become apparent that gun control in America is somewhat loose. In 2018, there were 24 school shootings in k-12 schools that injured or killed students and staff. After the Parkland shootings, the US president, Donald Trump, suggested arming teachers as a preventive while students protested for a change in gun control and protection within schools. This specific civic advertisement is from “momsdemandaction.org” which is a group of parents advocating for children and families safety and rights. In the image illustrated there are two children seated in what appears to be a US school library. One girl holds the children’s book Little Red Riding Hood while the other is armed with an assault weapon. Written above the two girls is the phrase, “One child is holding something that’s been banned in America to protect them” in white writing and in red writing follows, “Guess which one.” Below is a small description of how Little Red Riding Hood was banned in schools because of the bottle of wine in her basket. This image persuades the audience to side with the organization in believing that guns should be banned or controlled more than an innocent child’s book containing alcohol. Even if the audience was pro guns, they would agree with this image that its quite ridiculous to ban a book before a major assault riffle.

  1. Great artifact. I think anytime there is an issue related to children, there is a lot more sympathy evoked from readers or viewers. Society feels a need to protect children (the future generation), however, the Second Amendment is such a fundamental right that there is constant debate.

  2. Wow! Great artifact choice! This image is very powerful, and you did a fantastic job breaking down it’s components to reveal the rhetoric behind it.

  3. This was an awesome choice. Your explanations are super concise and the fact that this is such a highly debated topic, you explained it really well.
