I can’t believe the time has come to write my final passion blog not only of the semester, but the year! Continuing with the same theme for this blog since last August has really instilled and furthered my love for the world of fashion. In honor of this final post, I’ve decided to do something completely different than my usual analysis of upcoming fashion trends. Instead, I’ve decided to write about my personal fashion trend choices that I wear and the pros and cons of them.

First up we have felt hats. The thing that I love about these specific hats is that unlike other hat styles, this one can be worn all year. In the photos below I am shown wearing the same hat in both late October and mid July in Colorado. Both outfits that I paired with the hat could not be more different. In the summer outfit I paired the hat with a bandeau top and striped pants made out of light cotton. In the other picture, I’m wearing the winter outfit that I paired it with a sweater and ripped jeans. The versatility of these hats is obviously the biggest pro, however one con I have is that in the summer, the felt material can make the hat really warm and kind of uncomfortable to wear.

The second fashion trend that I’ve followed are jumpsuits. In the last 2 years these have become a huge summer staple and I am totally here for them. I think that they are both a classy and casual outfit that can work for a number of occasions. I do think that there are some that are better or worse than others. The one that I own is strapless, has a cinched waist, and has a navy and white striped pattern. I absolutely love it and it’s so comfortable but my only con is that it’s kind of an odd length on me because I have such long legs and this particular jumpsuit needs a specific height to match it.

My last and favorite trend would be leather jackets. I did actually do a post on leather jackets and since have bought another one that is a brown leather. The one in the pictures is my favorite black leather jacket that I got on sale at Nordstrom for $60 (which for a leather jacket is a steal). It makes every outfit so much more chic and is actually quite warm for the odd material that it is. The only con to leather jackets is that they are IMPOSSIBLE to clean. Obviously a stain can wipe off leather somewhat easily, but it’s still kind of gross to not wash a jacket especially if you wear it as much as I do mine.

I hope you all have enjoyed reading my blogs and it was so nice getting to know more about all of you through your blogs. It’s obviously disappointing that I could never meet any of you in person, but I feel like this was as good of connection as we could have given the circumstances. I wish you all luck on your future academics and hope you all have a great summer!

Biker Short Banter

Normally I write about fashion trends that I am a fan of or looking forward to in the upcoming seasons. This week however, I want to write about a trend that I’m a bit on the fence about… biker shorts. I have been seeing these all around campus paired with crop tops or oversized sweatshirts. As the weather gets warmer, I expect to see more girls move from jeans to jean shorts, and in this case from leggings to biker shorts.

Biker shorts are usually the same material as leggings, are skin tight, and cut off a couple of inches above the knee. Although they look pretty comfortable, I’m not sure they are the most flattering fashion item I’ve seen. When paired with oversized sweatshirts or t-shirts, I think they look much cuter and are less risqué than when those tops are worn with shorter shorts like athletic or jean shorts.

One of the bonuses of biker shorts is that they double as casual and athletic wear. Because so, there are so many stores and websites that sell them whether it be a fashion boutique or a big name athletic brand. One of my favorites that I’ve seen thus far is being sold by Lululemon. Lululemon is one of, if not the most, well known athletic brands today. The material and quality of everything sold by them is top notch and incredibly durable. One of the best aspects of the company is the lifetime warranty on each clothing article. Whether the logo peels off, or a thread becomes loose, the company will take it back and replace it with a brand new version of the same item. Of course, this does come with the very high price tag on their clothing. These shorts specifically are currently priced at $59 which for a pair of athletic shorts is a bit outrageous. However I can easily say that with my trust in this company, these are definitely the biker shorts I would try out if I were to buy a pair.

LULULEMON BIKER SHORTS

Other brands that I’ve raved about in the past like Princess Polly have sadly let me down when scavenging for other biker short examples. The pair from them are priced much lower than the one from Lululemon at a current cost of $26. But the color that they come in is beige which for shorts is just not attractive looking whatsoever. I do however like that they are a ribbed material and not smooth like the Lululemon ones because it creates more texture and suction around the waist.

PRINCESS POLLY BIKER SHORTS

In the end after researching this trend, I can speak for myself and say that I will not be buying a pair of biker shorts. I think it takes a very specific body type to pull them off and even then they have to be perfectly paired with an appropriate top. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for other pairs of biker shorts that are maybe more flattering but until then I’m going to stick with my athletic shorts.

Living in Linen

From the personal opinions and experiences with the fashion trends I write about in my blog, it’s pretty obvious that these stem from a pretty intense shopping addiction… Trust me, I am very aware of this and how bad it is for my bank account but in return I work an absurd amount of hours to fuel this lifestyle. So, after I wrote last week’s blog on swimsuits, I started looking at Pinterest for more predictions for summer trends. Immediately I came across one that I fell in love with and spent a good bit on a few pieces from one of my favorite online clothing retailers, “ASOS”.

This trend is linen fashion. Linen is a really odd concept for a material for clothing so I was a bit skeptical not owning anything of this material prior. One thing that I ordered was a pair of green linen shorts. I’m not a huge fan of jean shorts since to me they just feel very “middle school” and immature so I think this will be a perfect alternative. I also purchased a beige colored short sleeve linen shirt that I think would look really cute paired with a bandeau underneath or I could even use it as a swimsuit cover up.  Either way I think both are going to be a great addition to my wardrobe and I am crossing my fingers that they look as good in person as they did on the site.

SHORTS I ORDERED FROM ASOS

The best part of this new trend is since it’s a material, it can be used on most articles of clothing. There are shorts, shirts, tank tops, skirts, and even dresses all sewn in linen on various sites. On Pinterest you can click on one of the pictures and it will usually take you to an outside link that is either where it is sold, or a blog similar to mine on the article of clothing. Although I bought mine from “ASOS” a vast majority of this fashion trend is being sold off of “Etsy”. “Etsy” is a really cool site because all of the things sold are from private businesses. Typically clothing on here is handmade and because so, is extra pricy. However, like I’ve talked about in past blog posts, this is a great way to support businesses that are against fast fashion. Linen is also a super sustainable material, so this trend is great for the environment especially with all of the boutiques selling it on Etsy.

LINEN SET FROM ETSY

I can’t wait to see how the items I purchased look and if they’re actually flattering or not. I cannot wait for summer and see more trends emerge for the upcoming season over the next couple of weeks. I think linen is going to set the popularity of simplicity and monochrome colors as a theme for this year but we will see if this prediction pans out.

Flower Power

Since I began my passion blog on fashion trends last August, I’ve covered just about every article of clothing. Pants, shirts, jackets, shoes, and so forth have all been the peak of my interest because it’s what I’ve seen most of around me, on social media, in magazines, etc. However as the weather gets warmer, the trends have shifted to a different trend of fashion and that would be swimsuits.

I personally love following swimsuit trends each season because one fascinating thing is every year they drastically shift. Other trends in fashion typically ride along the same wavelength from season to season, but not swimsuits. One year a color or pattern may be in, and the next it’s seen as passé and completely outdated. An example of this would be one that I’m sure most (or at least females) will remember which is the 2016 swimsuit trend that was “Triangl” bikinis. The brand “Triangl” swept swim fashion that summer as every girl wanted to own the brightly colored bikini with the iconic black lining. However, if someone were to wear that same bikini today, fashion trendsetters would laugh.

Now with this swim season just a few short months away, fashion icons and influencers are already stocking up on what I’ve observed to be a modern take on an older pattern. In the 70s and 80s vibrant floral patterns were quite popular and now they’re making an appearance on big name fashion brands for this upcoming summer season. This trend doesn’t necessarily revolve around a specific brand, or swimsuit style like in past years with high waisted bottoms or strapless tops. It could be a one piece, monokini, bikini, basically any shape built for any woman but they all have this same pattern in common.

RETRO SWIMSUITS FROM MODA OPERANDI

The most popular suits so far are bright color combinations like orange and yellow, pink and purple, blue and green, and so on. This bright retro fashion trend is just what 2021 needs coming out of one of the worst years in just about everyone’s book. I was skeptical at first because I have always stuck to neutral and monotone colors like black or white but this new trend is starting to grow on me the more I see the increase in popularity. Like everything else in the fashion world, the price completely depends on the name on the tag. Although you can definitely find ones for cheaper, the ones I’ve seen worn most by celebrities thus far range between about $95 to $145. My personal favorite sits right between this price range at $120. This one immediately grabbed my attention because it looks less like a swimsuit and more like a really cool top torn out of the 70s. It has the fun colorful pattern that is so popular this season but it also has a little wooden ring in the center of the waist that kind of looks like a belt.

RETRO SWIMSUIT WITH WOODEN RING FROM AFENDS.

Obviously it’s barely even April and there’s still a good 8 or so weeks until I should even think about going to the beach or pool, but seeing this swimsuit trend and others that are going to make an appearance this season gets me really excited for everything to come. Hopefully more summer trends emerge before my next passion blog post so I can analyze some more to prep for this upcoming season!

Current Corsets

Movies and film manipulate the way people and society think and function all the time without us even knowing it. Most times it’s simply just because it’s an inspiration, or a muse if you will. It could be a new slang term, a traveling location, basically anything in the industry that is seen as desirable to viewers can be copied into real life. But above all things taken from the screen, trends of fashion trump them all.

2021 Netflix series, Bridgerton, took the world by storm with its dreamy, dramatic fictional story of the dating season in Regency Era England. The show accurately showed the fashion and clothing articles worn at the time such as corsets, and gowns with layers upon layers of shiny fabrics and silk. Obviously, everyone was immediately obsessed with the patterns and colors of past fashion being showcased so why not bring it to life in modern times?

SHOT OF FASHION SEEN IN BRIDGERTON

SHOT OF FASHION SEEN IN BRIDGERTON

Today materials like those seen on the gowns would cost hundreds upon thousands of dollars, so that obviously would be hard to copy… but what about the corsets worn under the gowns? This is exactly where the trend came about. Although corsets were originally used as undergarments to suck in women’s waists, now they are being manipulated to mimic a cute, trendy top. My favorite part about the trend is that women are wearing these corsets with casual pants like jeans which are such a simple, basic clothing article worn today.

There are many variations of these new corset tops. Although some still incorporate the laced up back that slims the waist, others are now elastic or clip in the back. Some have straps or sleeves, and others are strapless. They may all have different aspects and details, but one thing remains of the influence of the past like in Bridgerton, the patterns and colors. By combining the colors and patterns of these extravagant gowns with the plain corsets worn underneath, there is this perfect mesh of old and new. Many popular ones come in a satin color but my personal favorites have flowers and shiny details of leaves or vines.

These corsets do look expensive (and some are), but there are also reasonable options at a much lower price. Pretty Little Thing, one of my favorite online fashion brands, has a strapless white lace corset on sale for only $30. On the other end, from a high fashion brand such as Intermix, their floral corset top is priced at $395. Either way I think that these tops are a great way to honor fashion of the past while also modernizing it for life and fashion as we know it today.

Trendy Trousers

The trend I’m analyzing this week is very up and coming. I’ve only seen it on models in high end magazines and once or twice when I was in the city at home. The sexuality of clothing is a barrier that fashion icons have been trying to break down for centuries. Whether it was Freddy Mercury, Elton John, and now Harry Styles, men have been proving that any clothing articles can be appropriate for both sexes. Women too have now adapted this ideal and I believe that this trend will be much more popular in the upcoming spring/summer of this year. This trend is trousers. Obviously I am aware of how odd it sounds that women would wear trousers but these ones in particular are fashion forward, high end, statement trousers.

Trousers have always been appropriate work wear for men. Most times if you walked into an office building most men would be wearing this article of clothing accompanied by a collared shirt, tie, etc. Now however, various companies (mostly avant garde, designer ones) have modeled these pants to fit women in a way that looks both fashionable and powerful. Women’s work wear has always consisted of pencil skirts and slacks. The main difference between slacks and trousers is that slacks fit tightly throughout (but aren’t skin tight like skinny jeans or leggings) whereas trousers fit at the top of the hip to secure their placement and then are loose all the way down past the ankle. These trousers were similar to the ones often paired with pants suits that were quite popular in the 80s but I think that the new and rising popularity of these pants in modern time will be a turning point for women’s fashion. My favorite pair that I’ve seen was in the newest issue of vogue and was designed by Vince and are being sold by Nordstrom. They are currently priced at $325 and come in two colors, oatmeal (a light beige color) and black.

VINCE NORDSTROM TROUSERS

VINCE NORDSTROM TROUSERS

These are more of the basic model for trousers which are easy to pair with more eccentric colored tops but I also love the new statement trousers that are being shown during New York Fashion Week which just happens to be taking place today. I obviously could never afford anything showcased this week but I found a very similar pair of statement trousers at one of my favorite online clothing sites “Nasty Gal”. “Nasty Gal” was the star of my blog posts last semester so obviously I had to bring it into this post. The company was created by a girl in her 20s who wanted to take vintage clothing, repair/make it her own, and then resell it. Now the brand still has vintage clothing (for a bit of a high price tag) but also sells reasonable, fashionable clothes for younger women. If you want to learn more I suggest watching “Girl Boss” on Netflix, it’s a show about the loose storytelling of how the CEO created her brand. Any who, the pair that I found were priced at a reasonable $98 and are hot pink and velvet. Basically I am obsessed with them but sadly they don’t fit into the fashion culture of state college… but if you are looking to strut down the streets of a city or look insanely cool in an office meeting, these are definitely the pants for you.

Care to Flare?

After being home for the last 3 months, I’ve definitely had time to reunite with my hometown friends. All of them are very into fashion like myself and are always on top of the newest trends so I trust them in giving me advice on what to wear. On New Years Eve we all went to a nice dinner at one of our favorite restaurants (which was open to 50% capacity because cases in Colorado are very low). There I saw a common theme among the outfits of both my friends, and the young people seated around us… all were wearing flared pants.

Flared pants (also often known as boot cut jeans) are a pair of jeans or pants that are tight from your waist down to your knees and then flare out so that they are loose by your calves and feet. These were very popular in the 60s and of course like every other current fashion trend, are making a comeback. These pants come in several different materials such as corduroy, polyester, velvet, and of course the most popular being denim. However, even the denim pairs look different then they did in the past. Some are dyed black, others are in animal print, some are distressed with holes or around the ankles, and so forth.

VELVET FLARE PANTS FROM FREE PEOPLE

Since noticing how popular these pants have become, I decided to go buy a pair. At first I was skeptical so I bought a simple pair that was navy blue denim with distress around the bottom from Nordstrom. No joke, I think this is where my new addiction began. They’re one of the most comfortable jeans I own and feel a lot less restrictive than a normal pair of skinny jeans. Since then I have bought two other pairs. One is a bit different from Nasty Gal, a company started from up-cycling vintage clothes, that is black and also has slits on the outside of each leg. My other pair is from Altar’d State and is white with a navy blue and yellow scarf belt.

DENIM FLARE PANTS FROM NASTY GAL

It’s safe to say that I one hundred percent am on board with this new trend but I do have one criticism since I myself have started to wear these pants. Shoes. With skinny jeans and other skin tight pants, almost every type of shoe looks cute and pairs well with the pants. But when it comes to flare pants, options are definitely limited. It’s hard to wear any shoes that go up above the ankle because then it’s on your skin which can cause friction and blistering unless you’re wearing tall socks (I learned this one very quickly). And chunky shoes/sneakers look like there’s just a lot going on because of the statement that the flare is already making. So my recommendation of the happy medium would have to be booties, preferably ones that are one color and pointed at the toe. They look super cute and make the outfit a lot more fashionable. In all, I think this trend is definitely one to stay for the next couple of years and I can’t wait to see what other brands catch onto this renewed fashion piece.

Chic and Edgy Prints

In the past few weeks, I’ve been analyzing specific trends and types of clothing within the fashion industry. But this week I am going to be writing about a specific pattern that is repeating itself into 2020 as it has also done so in past years. And this is animal print. Yes, I know that animal print can look a bit tacky as it has in the past. But 2020 has brought a new twist to this old trend…It now looks edgy and chic.

Animal print can take a variety of shapes, patterns, and colors but the thing that the fashion industry loves most about animal print is how versatile it can be. It can be any material: denim, leather, polyester, cotton, and so forth thus making the options for clothing articles infinite. The animal print that has become popular in 2020 is predominantly on pants and jackets.

CHEETAH PRINT JACKET FROM SHEIN

I was first introduced to this upcoming trend by my hometown friend who goes to the University of Washington in Seattle. She is quite fashionable and has great taste so I always try to trust her with her new wardrobe changes. She sent me a picture before she was going out for my fashion approval. The outfit she had on was a skin-tight black bodysuit, a black leather jacket, black leather boots, and a pair of zebra print pants. At first glance I thought the pants were a lot but honestly this new print has now grown on me. They are from “Motel Rocks”, an online retailer very similar to the sites I mentioned last week, “Nasty Gal” and “Princess Polly”.

ZEBRA PRINT PANTS FROM MOTEL ROCKS

The new animal print when paired with the right color and accessories, can look quite edgy and expensive and more mature than the older trends of animal print. I personally will definitely be buying a similar if not the same pair as my friend. I think that animal print is exactly what 2020 needs because it just looks so much more fun and fresh than some of these other trends. Even if the idea of wearing a full on zebra print pant scares you, there are so many fun new purses, earrings, shoes, and so forth that also can compliment this new trend. The modernization of animal print is really just evidence that the fashion world is evolving more than ever this year and I could not be more excited to see where it will continue to lead us.

Zoven Trouser in 90's Zebra Black and White

Perfectly Puffed

Even though the last few days have been in the 70’s, Pennsylvania is starting to see the colder weather slowly trickle in. I was walking around downtown State College earlier today and although it was quite cold, not one student was wearing a jacket. I’m not sure if this is due to convenience, fashion choice, or just plain stupidity but regardless very few students are acknowledging the dropping temperature. So instead of my usual analysis of current fashion trends, I’m going to predict one that I think will take over this winter when Penn State Students can no longer bear the cold in t-shirts and leggings.

My go to online shopping websites at the moment are “Nasty Gal” and “Princess Polly”. I like these sites because usually they are on top of trends among younger women and aren’t ridiculously expensive. They’re clothing styles are pretty opposite with “Nasty Gal” relying on more hard-core  and modern fashion styles and “Princess Polly” relying on more girly and floral fashion. Although opposites, both just released a large inventory of what they’re naming as “Puffer Jackets”. They are kind of like a hybrid between down jackets, and 80’s ski jackets. They come in all different colors and are cropped at the hip.

WHITE PUFFER JACKET FROM NASTY GAL

Now why do I think these are going to become popular? Well, I was at the Target downtown the other day which for those who have been, know it’s quite small with limited inventory compared to that of a normal sized target. Despite this, they were actually selling these “Puffer Jackets” that were just about identical in comparison to the ones that I saw on “Nasty Gal” and “Princess Polly”. They’re on the more expensive side for typical Target fashion merchandise priced at $32. Downtown has very limited clothing retail selections for students and if the student is opposed to online shopping, the Target is a great place to look. THIS is why I think these jackets will be so successful and trendy this winter: because they’re now convenient.

NEON GREEN PUFFER JACKET FROM TARGET

Although a large retailer like Target selling these jackets is going to make them lose their “sparkle” and originality,  I still am going to buy one of these jackets just because they’re not only warm, but definitely on the fashionable side. Being from Colorado I own my fair share of large puffy jackets, but I think the bright colors being sold will be a nice change to my black and gray collection of cold weather apparel.

Patch-Work and a PSA

Jeans have been a staple wardrobe piece for years. They’ve gone through certain eras of types with flare jeans, bootcut, low-rise, mom jeans, high waisted, skinny jeans, and so forth. But like all of the other quirky trends that have emerged in 2020, jeans have followed suit with a new type commonly called “patch-work”. Unlike most of the other trends of jeans where they’re made for the “every-man” and are so popular that every closet or dresser has one tucked in it, these jeans are definitely not that case. For jeans, which are very basic and common pants, these are verging on high fashion and take a very bold person to wear them.

HIGH FASHION PATCH-WORK JEANS

I personally do not own a pair (yet) but am considering the more basic, less intimidating pair. Patch-work jeans come in many different styles and colors sold by many different types of fashion businesses. The more high fashion ones as previously mentioned come in bright colors such as pink and purple, or blue and green. Each piece of denim is then sewn in squares and rectangles to look rather distressed. The simpler versions however are either the same pattern but with navy denim, or are basic jeans but with little designs/patches sewn over the top.

SIMPLE PATCH-WORK JEANS

One of the best places to look right now for a more unique pair would be Etsy where private vendors sell these jeans that they’ve either sewn by hand or up-cycled from an old pair. Up-cycling is a new idea that’s becoming more apparent in the fashion industry that encourages the reuse and recycling of old articles of clothing. This discriminates fast fashion, large carbon emissions, and so forth. Fast fashion is a topic that I’ve wanted to discreetly bring and shame in my blog because it is such an important topic when discussing fashion. Fast fashion is a term used to describe inexpensive designs that are quickly transferred from factories to stores. This typically includes the exploitation of child labor and is terrible for the environment because of its transportation methods. Victoria’s Secret, H&M, Zara, and more are all fast fashion companies to avoid as a little PSA from myself.
