I cannot believe we have already gotten to the finale of our passion blogs and this will be my last post analyzing another controversial celebrity. It’s been a long but fun journey of trying to decipher an answer to this question. This post makes my blog come full circle as I analyze the person who served as the origin for this question.
It started off as an argument between my friends for my very “outlandish and absolutely unacceptable opinion”. Apparently saying you hate Kanye West when Donda was coming out results in evil stares and astonished gasps from everyone. Yup, I said it ladies and gentlemen, I am indeed not a fan of Mr. West.
Now before you attack me, let me explain why this man irks my very soul. We’ll start off with the Taylor incident (and no I’m not even a Swiftie before you ask). The way he felt so entitled that he thought it was acceptable to interrupt her special moment on stage was frustrating. I understand his disagreement; I felt the same exact way because duh Beyoncè should’ve won are you kidding me?! But he could have brought it up after the event ended or even after she got to finish speaking!
In addition to this, the man has had a LONG string of outlandish actions throughout his career. A lot of them deal with him spewing insults and other rude remarks at people who’ve made him angry. At the end of the day, he acts like a child majority of the time and everyone just runs with it.
I think one of the worst remarks he ever made was saying “400 years of slavery was a choice”. I don’t even think I need to elaborate on that statement because you should already know the issue with it.
I do not think Kanye is a bad guy. I think he is arrogant and says dumb things, but he is not the worst kind of evil in this world. What drives me most insane about his situation is how both himself and the media excuse his mental illness. He has opened up about it before and used it as justification for his actions. I think it’s dangerous to have a celebrity make outlandish remarks and excuses for not taking his medication and the media just feeds into it. It creates a harmful stigma surrounding mental health when it’s a subject that should be taken seriously.
Kanye is a musical genius. Despite what his song “Lift Yourself” might show, the man is extremely talented and has consistently made top hits throughout his career, as well as even produce some. I respect him as a musician, but not his actions as a person, which brings us all to the question- Can you really separate the artist from their art?
I think you did a great job at relating this back to the stigmas surrounding mental health. First, Kanye’s mental illness should never be an excuse for how he acts, it explains the actions but doesn’t excuse. On top of this, it creates harmful stigma for the rest of people suffering with mental illness as well.
Kanye is one of the people out there who I don’t necessarily like as a person but can somehow find his music enjoyable. I think his Presidential run in 2020 was very interesting to say the least…
