Spring Semester — RCL Blog 1

For my Passion Blog, I intend to continue the same topic as last semester –– true crime!  If you are new to my passion blog, I go over true crime cases each week ranging from serial killers, survival stories, weird psychological cases, cults, etc.

For my Civic issues blog, I was leaning towards researching issues with the US prison system (such as the high recidivism rate, lack of rehabilitative programs, for-profit incarceration –– essentially the prison industrial complex).  As a second idea, I was thinking about analyzing white- collar crimes and their cost to the American population (can you tell I’m a criminology/psychology major yet?).  I’m not sure if these ideas are too narrow or too broad, but that’s my starting point!

For my This I Believe Podcast, I’m a bit more at a loss for ideas.  A lot of what I’m looking towards are lessons/experiences I had with my dad, as he was a very influential, and I learned most of the greatest lessons in life from him.  He always advocated for kindness and generosity to all, but I feel as if those are more “basic” beliefs.  However, his passing really molded my personality to what it is today.  Combining that experience with my psychological mind, I find it extremely important to understand every aspect of an individual’s identity/experience before judging or making assumptions.  As of right now, those are the only ideas I have –– they’ll need a lot of help to become something coherent but at least that’s a start.

  1. I like the idea to talk about the US prison system in your civic blog. Since you are clearly interested in criminology you’d probably be able to executive that topic really well.

  2. Your passion blog seems so interesting! I like the ideas you have for your civic issue blog, especially researching the issues with our prison system. I feel like not many people know about it. I’m sorry to hear about your dad passing, but I’m glad he taught you so many great lessons and experiences. You make a great statement in that it’s important to know one’s identity before making assumptions.

  3. I can’t wait to hear some of the stories from your passion blog. No wonder shows like Criminal Minds are so addicting, I wanna read stories of what people have done and the mindset those criminals have to be able to carry out those actions. For your civic issue, I really enjoyed the idea of your white-collar crime and the costs that go along with it. Theres not much in the news about that and it’ll be good to bring that to attention within the public domain. And for your “this I believe” podcast I’m really looking forward to hearing how your dad has shaped some of your personal values and molded you into the person you are today. Parents are some of the most influential people in our lives.

  4. I like your passion blog topic about crime cases. And I think your idea of civic issue blogs is interesting. For your “This I believe” Assignment, I think it will be very meaningful to talk about the lessons you dad told you though it may be hard for you.
