ASHRAE is a global society focused on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability within the HVAC&R industry. ASHRAE’s mission is “to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigerating to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.” To support this mission, ASHRAE sponsors research, develops standards and handbooks, and creates continuing education programs.
ASHRAE was formed in 1959 as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. The Society was formed from the merger of the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineering (ASHAE) founded in 1894 and the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE) founded in 1904. While the current organization dates to 1959, ASHRAE is a continuation of its predecessor groups and considers 1894 the Society’s founding date.
Penn State has a strong history of involvement with ASHRAE. Four Penn State faculty members have been presidents of ASHRAE or a predecessor organization at the time of merger. Elmer Queer was president of ASHAE in 1958 at the time of the merger, and was a strong supporter of the merger. Post-merger presidents have been John Everetts, Jr (1961-62), Stanley F. Gilman (1971-72), and William P. Bahnfleth (2013-14)
PSU-UP Student Branch
The ASHRAE Student Branches provide an opportunity for students interested in the HVAC&R industry to develop into engaged young professionals in the field. The Penn State – University Park Student Branch was founded in 1983 and works to provide a diverse program of speakers, technical tours, projects, and networking opportunities for its members. Most of our members are undergraduate or graduate students in the PSU Department of Architectural Engineering, although we draw members from other departments, as well. Our sponsoring ASHRAE chapter is the Central PA Chapter, which is located within ASHRAE Region III. Our faculty advisor is Dr. Bill Bahnfleth.
In addition to being a recognized Student Branch of ASHRAE, we are also an officially recognized student organization at the Penn State University Park campus. A copy of our most recent club constitution is provided here. Please review the constitution for detailed information on our club structure and policies.
