Civic Issue Blog 1

Public transportation is considered as one of the most important aspects of transportation in a modern society. It has tremendous benefits for the environment which is a major advantage nowadays due to the critical issue of climate change and global warming. It is also a significant advantage for people unable to afford the purchase and maintenance of regular cars as well as people who are simply unable to manually operate cars due to health issues. Because of this, for my civic issue blogs, I decided to write about the topic of transportation, specifically public transport. Each blog I plan on tackling a different country and for this blog post, I plan on evaluating the public transportation here in the United States of America.

American cities are experimenting with free public transit

It is a well known fact that the United States of America is an extremely car dependent country.  Many of the developments are centered around cars such as suburbs and a large portion of middle and upper class citizens, and even lower class citizens, owns and uses a car.  In contrast, public transportation isn’t as popular or developed in the US, especially around less urban areas. This brings the question: why is the United States of America so centered around cars instead of public transportation?  To understand this, we must first look at the History of transportation in the US.

In the early 20th century, the introduction of the first automobile was a transformative moment for transportation as a whole. With Henry Ford’s assembly line, these transformative automobiles (cars) became much more affordable and accessible to the general public.  The mass production of these cars continued, making cars even more popular among American citizens.

The car dependency of America became even more engrained into the culture post world war 2 with the urban planning becoming more decentralized and thus car centered. A notable emphasis on suburban planning could be seen with a lot of urban citizens moving from urban areas to suburban areas that are more car dependent. It was difficult for public transportation to keep up with this decentralized development and this made owning a car a necessity due to the lack of public transit. Moreover, interstate highways were built that offered fast and convenient travel for cars which made owning and using a car even more of an advantage.

Furthermore, the obsession of Americans with cars is also due to the highly individualistic culture of the US that is obsessed with freedom. It would be an understatement to say that the cultural notions of freedom and mobility have an effect on Americans being less inclined to use public transportation and more likely to prefer personal travel. Unlike public transportation with pre-designated destinations, American car owners are free to travel to anywhere they want with their cars. With personal vehicles, they have full control over their transportation which is a major benefit for Americans who highly value freedom. The freedom to travel whenever they want, without being affected by schedules or routes that public transits have is an attractive feature of cars for them. I haven’t even mentioned the increased sense of comfort and security that comes with personal vehicles.

Now that we have determined why public transit is much less developed and popular compared to personal and autonomous travel, lets look at the state of the existing public transportation system in the US. Public transportation in the US consists of Subway, train, buses and many more with the most widespread being the buses.  This makes sense, as the buses are also able to utilize the interstate highways and roads built for cars unlike rails and subways that require special infrastructure built for them.  However, Subways as a form of public transportation are very popular in highly populated urban areas which may be due to them being cheaper and sometimes even faster (due to traffic) than traditional vehicles.

Still, there is a negative connotation that comes alongside public transportation in urban areas as it can attract dangerous people such as addict, criminals and people with untreated violent mental disorders which can make dangerous at certain hours, especially for women. This may also have an effect on why public transportation even on these urban areas have become less used over the past half century.

This brings the question: “How do we fix this?”. Public transport has numerous benefits as I mentioned in the beginning which makes it a worthwhile issue to solve. To begin with, I believe that making public transport more secure would be an important step.  Installing more cameras in the stations and vehicles could be a method that might make people, especially women and children, more inclined to utilize it during late hours. Moreover, making it cleaner is another crucial step. The subways in New York are notoriously dirty which makes them unpleasant to use, spending more budget to make it cleaner could make it a cleaner and more comfortable experience and attract more people.  Also, investing smartly, such as putting high speed trains between popular plane routes could make investing on public transport less risky for companies and politicians.

In conclusion, public transportation in America is very lackluster due to the highly car dependent nature of the cities as well as people. However, it is still crucial to invest in public transportation as it has numerous benefits including environmental sustainability and accessibility. Despite the government being unwilling to invest much in public transportation, there are still ways to improve public transportation and make it more popular among the general public such as making it more secure and clean which can allow the officials to reconsider investment on public transportation.

The basilica cistern also known as the “Yerebatan sarayi (Sunken Palace)” is undoubtedly one of the most iconic places in Istanbul. It is considered a must – see place by many and for good reason. It is both historically significant and mesmerizing. This palace definitely demonstrates how vibrant and historical the city of Istanbul is. A few years ago, this palace was restored by the local city council. In this blog post, I will talk about why this place is so culturally significant as well as why the restoration of historic buildings like this is extremely necessary.

History

Yerebatan Sarnici - The Sunken Palace or Basilica Cistern in Istanbul

This palace was built by the Eastern Roman Emperor (Byzantine) Justinian I (527-565). Can you believe how old this palace is? I personally think that a building continuing to last for nearly 2000 years is a great achievement. The cistern was built in order to provide a water filtration system for some of the important buildings of the empire. It had a massive water capacity of nearly 80000 – 100000 tons which I believe is huge for the time. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453 this palace continued to be in use for many years by the Ottoman government.

BASILICA CISTERN - Foodie

The interior of the palace is beautiful and magical. There are 366 cylindrical collumns which creates a mighty atmosphere. The ground of the building is water, with the visitors having to stand on bridges to traverse the building. Sometimes you can see fish swimming in the water which is a very nice feature. The lighting of the palace is also dim which further elevates the magical atmosphere. As a kid, when I had visited this palace, I was mesmerized.  Although I don’t remember it in detail as it was a long time ago, I was very impressed and this had ignited my curiosity for history.

The restoration

Due to the risk of collapse and large amounts of tourists having no waiting area, the city council decided to restore the palace. It was a great decision in my opinion because these types of ancient buildings have security risks that need to be addressed, especially with large amounts of visitors coming every day.  Furthermore, a waiting area being given to tourists might have made their experience better and increased the number of tourists which could have benefited the local economy. Moreover, I believe that the environment of the palace is much better as can be seen from the picture above. All in all, I believe that restoring this building was a great decision and should be considered for other ancient buildings as well. Many people can be sceptical of restoration due to the fear that it might harm the original history of the artifact. However, if done right like in this case, it can actually severely benefit the building.

RCL post 2

For my civic issue topic, I am certainly going the choose the topic of public transport. My belief that public transport is crucial for societies hasn’t changed at all. I believe that it will be an enjoyable experience to write about how different countries and areas tackle public transport and evaluate them. I also think that it will be interesting to look into how culture affects the public transportation systems on different countries. For every blog post, I will analyse the public transportation of a different country or area.  I am thinking of analysing the US, Japan, China and Turkey. I am especially interested in the public transportation of Japan as I was amazed by it when I went there.

For my passion blog post, I am thinking of writing about Istanbul as it is a city that I care deeply about. I think that there is much to write about Istanbul as it is a huge city both culturally and geographically. It is also a very historic city that has been a prominent part of different empires such as the Roman empire and Ottoman empire and has traces left by them.

In conclusion, my Passion blog will be about Istanbul while my Civic blog will be about public transportation.

This is my speech script:

If you told me 4 years ago that simply entering all of my tasks and duties on a digital calendar would be the key to improve my grades, reduce my anxiety and maintain a good work/life balance, I wouldn’t believe you. However, now I can confidently say that it has made a significant improvement in my life. In this speech, I will talk about why I believe scheduling has a transformative impact on our lives.

In my second year of high school, I was aiming to enter the IB program which required a certain gpa as a prerequisite. However, as someone who was struggling with ADHD, I was simply unable to keep up with my classes. I was constantly missing assignments and entering exams without sufficient preparation.

The turning point came when I learned that my grades were not enough to enter the IB program. It was a devastating moment, I felt as if  all my time and effort was for nothing and that I was a disappointment to my parents. That’s when I realized that a change in my methods was necessary.

I started by entering all of my assignments, exams, and study sessions into a digital calendar. It was a simple action but the impact was significant. I was able to keep track of my assignments much better and allowed me to allocate time to studying, breaks and my other responsibilities. As a result, I found my academic performance beginning to gradually improve. I was much better prepared for my exams and stopped missing my assignments. Thanks to my new method of scheduling, I was finally able to enter the IB program.

Furthermore, it turns out that scheduling has benefits that extend beyond academics. Scheduling helped me manage my time effectively in different aspects of my life. For example, it made it easier for me to exercise consistently. In addition, surprisingly, I found myself playing video games more when I was scheduling as a well organized calendar allowed me to allocate time for personal interests, social life and hobbies which included video games.

Moreover, this practice also severely improved my mental health. Before doing this, I had a crushing anxiety problem caused by my chaotic and undisciplined life and my grades falling didn’t help either. However, by organizing my time I felt as if I had my life under control and in a stable condition which decreased my anxiety.

In conclusion, I believe in the transformative impact of scheduling. This is because for me personally, scheduling has had a monumental beneficial impact on my academic life, personal life as well as my mental health. However, it should be noted that this was for me personally and may not be applicable to everyone.

My two ideas for the this I believe speech are public transport and importance of allergy information. I believe that public transport is a crucial aspect of transportation. It is a lot cheaper, does not require any training, and environment friendly. I used to rely on it heavily back in Istanbul and was extremely disappointed when I arrived at the US to see how lackluster it was here. I also remember vividly my trip to Japan and how practical the public transport system was there. For my second this I believe topic, I am considering the importance of allergy awareness. My sister has gluten allergy, and she struggles in many parts of the world to find gluten free meals in restaurants due to the lack of knowledge about this issue. I believe that this issue is even more dangerous for people who have severe allergies and therefore I believe that more knowledge about it would be extremely beneficial.

For my passion blog, I am thinking of writing about Istanbul, the city I grew up in. Istanbul holds a special place in my heart as I spent 14 years of my life there. I believe that writing about it would be a very enjoyable experience. I can mention the different parts and monuments of the city and possibly the controversies surrounding them. My second idea for my passion blog can be history. I can select a specific part of history that I am interested in and explore the different aspects of it for each blog post. I believe that this could be an interesting idea for my second passion blog.

For my civic issue blog, I am also thinking about public transportation. As I mentioned above, I believe that it is crucial due to it being cheap, eco-friendly and easy to use. I am thinking of exploring and evaluating different countries or regions for each blog post such as Japan, US and Turkey and evaluate them. My second idea for my civic issue blog would be healthcare. In my opinion, healthcare is extremely important that has massive effects on the lives of many which makes it necessary for countries to have efficient healthcare systems. Similar to my first idea, I can explore and evaluate how different countries manage healthcare such as Singapore, US, Turkey and China.

In conclusion, these are my ideas for my passion, blog, civic blog and This I believe speech.
