The Race of the Work Force

Behind the shade of stereotypes a new fungus grows. For years stereotypes have spread all across the world, leaving impressions and thoughts in the minds of our society. Weather the stereotype regards race, gender, or sexuality lasting beliefs can be imprinted in the minds of children and even adults. Many stereotypes lead people to believe specific actions, occupations, and preferences are determined by race.

Common stereotypes include: that all basketball players are African American or that everyone in cleaning services are Hispanic.  These are drastic misrepresentations of these races. Not all African Americans are basketball players and not all Hispanics are cleaners. This is purely the truth. Many races grow up to be a wide variety of professions.

These representations teach people to believe certain races cannot be anything other than their respective stereotypes. This is harmful for a variety of reasons. For instance some claim that all East Asians are excellent at math but when per-say a Korean happens to be bad at math, they could experience notable bullying or mocking.

This should lead us to start combating and changing these stereotypes. Nothing can become better in this society if we as people cannot see outside of misrepresentative stereotypes. It is up to us, as a society, to change our ways of thinking and learn to broaden our mindsets.

Stereotypes are harmful and can be hard to catch. However, we can learn from our mistakes and take a stance against them. These stereotypes can lead to an isolating and set state of mind regarding the future. Everyones future is up to the individual to decide. So, I leave you with this question, how has stereotypes affected your life?
