Outreach Me giving a guest lecture on astronomy to two classes of third graders at Avalon Elementary in Orlando, Florida, Dec 2017. The children were really captivated by beautiful pictures and had surprisingly advanced questions for me, such as: “Why does Saturn having rings?” or “What happens if I go inside a black hole?” Me volunteering at the Florida Museum of Natural History’s annual Starry Night event, held Nov 2016. I was supervising the “Cosmic Tunnel”, an attraction in which the interior of a dark canvas was painted with ever-increasing rungs of the distance ladder, from planets to the solar system, to the galaxy to clusters of galaxies. The canvas was supported by wooden scaffolds and illuminated internally with night lights. The children or adults could crawl or roll on a dolly through the tunnel! It was a great success! Me volunteering with the University of Florida’s Department of Astronomy at the NASA John F. Kennedy Space Center Star Party event explaining the transit method for detecting exoplanets to interested laypersons in Aug 2016. We had a little demo which had a motorized planetary system revolving around a lightbulb, with a photometer positioned at the observer’s perspective along the line of side. The projector there shows the lightcurve, with a characteristic drop when the “planet” crosses in between the observer and the light source!
