During the 2014 Super Bowl bud light released their “Up for Whatever” campaign in which they ask a random guy which they found at a bar if he is up to do anything for the night. The guy accepts the offer and is given a bud light at the start of the night. He is then taken to a limo where he is invited to a bachelorette party, ends up beating Arnold Schwarzenegger in a sudden death table match, and finally ends up on stage with One Republic at a private concert.

While the campaign was to make the consumers feel like they could have a good time if they choose to drink their beer, that is not how some people took it. Printed on their bottles was, “The perfect beer for removing ‘No’ from your vocabulary for the night.” Considering the role that alcohol plays in many rape cases it was not a good idea for them to convey this type of message on every single one of their products. The advertisement and the campaign became very controversial as customers believed that the ad was promoting rape.

Even though the advertisement was supposed to send a fun and lighthearted message to their customers, they were left with a message which they did not support. Since the backlash Bud Light has apologized for their slogan, and have stopped printing it on their bottles. I hope that next time Bud Light will think more carefully about what they print on their bottles and do more consumer research beforehand.
