The Positive Impacts That Technology Has Had on Society

Through the exponential rise of technology that we have seen since the 90’s alone has left a positive mark on society. The major fields of society that technology has impacted include: transportation, agriculture, communication, medicine, education, and business. The main focus of this blog will be on the fields of communication and transportation.

Let’s take a moment to step back in time and think about the first phone you owned. Mine was a Motorola Razor. Now this was a flip phone that was incredibly difficult to text on. I remember even going on the internet was a hassle because most sites weren’t “mobile supported.” If I was trying to do some quick research to answer a question or a problem that I encountered while out and about would have been incredibly difficult. Even watching a YouTube video was a problem; it was incredibly poor quality. Now, almost everyone has a smart phone. Browsing the web is so easy to do on these devices and most can even do it through voice commands. They all support some sort of multi-tasking technology as well. So that you can be on the phone and browsing the internet. Also, we now have the ability to have a face to face conversation with people without even being in the same vicinity through the rise of face-time and other like applications. Staying in touch has never been so easy. Not only do we have high-tech phones, but there are other means of communication through online instant messagers, Skype, Facebook, twitter, and a massive amount of other similar forms of social media.

In addition to communication, technology has lead to positive innovations in the field of transportation as well. Over the last few years there has been a steady increase in the popularity of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are a lot more cost efficient and environmentally friendly than the traditional gas powered vehicles. Being able to power your vehicle on $2.50 as opposed to $23.00 is quite the positive innovation. Even more recently there has been a rise in new automotive innovations being self-driving vehicles, as well as vehicles that are spatially aware. Tesla has a vehicle currently on the market that can navigate itself through traffic with minimal user interaction. However, a method more widely used are flush sonar sensors. These are found around the bumpers of most new automotive vehicles that notify the driver when something is in close proximity to the vehicle. In certain brands these sensors will not only notify the driver, but also cause the vehicle to come to a halt; thus preventing an accident. In addition, it’s even more common that these sensors are used to enable the vehicle to parallel park itself.

In conclusion, the increase in technology innovation has made it a lot easier for people all over the world to communicate in multiple ways and stay connected. Technology has made transportation a lot safer and definitely more environmentally friendly. I’m excited to see what changes come next.
