Accept or Ignore

Social media and the typical elements that accompany it such as likes, dislikes, friends, and number of followers are certainly a large part of our lives as college students, with the lingo and features of key apps like Snapchat and Instagram having been ingrained in our lives from as early as middle school. The Live United Initiative against poverty utilizes the commonplace of social media in general, but more specifically the friend request feature, to call attention to the issue of global poverty. The exigence to this post is a long-lasting, systemic problem which necessitates the need for both individual and community interaction and response in order to see change in the global poverty rate, and the overall standard of living. With a broad and far-reaching issue such as poverty, the organization chose to emphasize the individual factor of community and civic engagement, directly asking viewers of the ad whether they will “accept” or “ignore” those in need. Each and everyone of us has no doubt spent at least a minute or two flipping through Instagram or Snapchat follower requests, occasionally pausing on an interesting, or potentially suspect profile; this ad represents that pause in the typical follow accept/deny experience, making viewers question the role that they could play in improving someones quality of life. Though the ad does not have a specific targeted audience other than those familiar with the workings of social media, the common nature and easily understood message of a friend request in this advertisement allows the organization to reach a vast array of people whom they seek to call to action. Even the fine-print message at the bottom of the advertisement, “when poverty strikes, anyone can strike back”, invokes an additional common message, the idea that you can help to spark change in a community plays on the human capacity and intrinsic desire to be a part of a group. This civic-artifact employs the ever-common features of social media sites, along with tried and true rhetorical themes of engaging community and individual responsibility in order to call attention to a crucial issue of international sustainability and community stability – poverty. Live United understood that while many are not familiar with the complexities of poverty, most all would understand the concept of a pending friend request.

Passion Blog Brainstorming

Hello, everyone! Here are my top two ideas for my Passion Blog:

Best Study Locations on Campus –

So my first (and by far favorite) idea for my passion blog is to go around campus visiting various locations, and describe a popular/potential study location based on a number of different factors. Everyone has different preferences for studying – outside or inside, loud or silent, light or dark, etc. – so I will be testing out a variety of differing locations. Each post will include helpful information like type/amount of seating, a scale of loudness, the type of lighting, snack and drink availability, walking distance from each dorm block, and the overall vibe of the space in order to give everyone a very informative review of each location.

Field Hockey Understanding –

My secondary idea for the passion blog revolves around my love for, and high school experience playing field hockey, as well as my acknowledgement that it is definitely not a very popular, or well understood sport. The goal of this blog would be to hopefully draw people towards the sport, convince someone to go see a Penn State field hockey game, or even to just provide people with a basic understanding of the sport to shed light on how exciting and overall interesting a sport field hockey is to play and to watch.
