Philadelphia School District: Budget Crisis Gets Even Worse

There have been significant budget cuts for education across every state. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the budget crisis is getting even worse. As a district that is scrapping cash from anywhere it can and has cut over 100 teachers, nurses, and extra curricular programming, they may also be out of $2.6 million dollars. ABC new Philadelphia reported that a charter school in Philadelphia owes the school district $2.6 million

dollars but is unable to come up with the money to pay the school district.

The Walter Palmer school is a K-12 charter school located in Philadelphia and operated by Walter Palmer, a civil rights veteran. The high school portion of the school has recently been shut down by the school district for enrolling more students than originally sanctioned. This has left many parents searching for a new school for their children. The school is now struggling to keep the K-8 portion of the school open. To make problems worse, the school district is now demanding the $1.5 million dollars in fees and another $1.1 million that is overdue to the school district. The charter school does not have the funds right now at all to pay the money to the school district. In a district that could really use the money, this is becoming a big problem for both parties. Philadelphia is also considering revoking the license of the charter school, forcing it to close altogether. When you thought the Philly school district was doing bad, it keeps getting worse.

This reminds me of a charity event my high school does every year. Around the holidays my school would raise as much money and gifts as possible for the Sheppard School in Philadelphia. It is located in area with low income rates and every year there school is almost shut down due to budget cuts it is very sad. Other more privileged schools should do their best to help schools like that in any way they can.

It is sad that funds for education are being cut everywhere. There are definitely other areas where funds can be cut besides education and they aren’t being looked into as much. Cutting educational funds will only have a direct negative effect future education in America.
