State Wide Lawsuit

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been under fire recently for the lack of funds school districts in Pennsylvania receive. School districts like the Philadelphia school district have been forced to make extensive cuts, leaving students with overpopulated classrooms, few extracurricular’s , and no full time nurse on staff. This problem is not only with the school district of Philadelphia. All over the state of Pennsylvania, school districts are getting frustrated with school funding. Because of this, Philly.com has reported that six school districts in PA are suing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania citing lack of funding. The William Penn School District (Delaware County), Panther Valley School District (Carbon County), the School District of Lancaster, the Greater Johnstown School District (Cambria County), the Wilkes-Barre Area School District (Luzerne County), and the Shenandoah Valley School District (Schuylkill County) are all taking part in the lawsuit. It is interesting to note that the Philadelphia School district, a state run school district, is not participating in the lawsuit. The district remarked that,

“We believe that as a school district, we help out schools best by working with the governor and legislature. We unequivocally  advocate for a formula that will fully and equitably fund the schools in our city and across the Commonwealth.”

Newly elected governor Tom Wolf has campaigned on restoring education funds in Pennsylvania. Since Wolf will become a respondent in the lawsuit when he takes office, it will be interesting how he handles the case.

It’s so sad that a school does not have a full-time nurse! What happens if there is a real medical emergency and no nurse? Being from Delaware, right outside of Philly, I hear all the news about this. It’s a shame that the school districts are resorting to that, something needs to be done.

The problem and main reason Tom Corbett didn’t win re-election is because of the education cuts he implemented. He is actually the only Pennsylvania governor to not win a second-term, and the main reason was because of his education policy. Did his education cuts affect you personally?
