Newsworthy News

If you look around, news is being presented in many different forms all around campus. From bulletin boards, to newspapers, to TV monitors displaying information, students, teachers, and faculty are exposed to a variety of useful (and sometimes pointless) information.

When it comes to what is “newsworthy”, it really depends on the person. What others may find to be fascinating, you yourself may find as boring. That is the beauty of news it that there are a variety of things people report on. If you open up your daily newspaper you will see different categories for business, world news, economy, sports, weather, and many other topics. The reader then becomes a free agent to pick and choose what they would like to read. Because of this, reporting a broad range of topics can ensure that almost every readers needs are met.

My favorite part about the news is the different mediums that news is available on. For example, I like getting my news via Twitter and blogs but also more professional outlets such as newspapers and TV channels. While the typically all share the same news to their readers/listeners, they do so in a different light which sets them apart from the other news mediums. Typically Twitter will cover news very fast, but the website limits users to 140 character per tweet so there is a lack of detail. Blogs often have detail but the writer usually shares his or her opinion strongly throughout the writings. Television and Newspaper usually cover the topic in a more broad sense, but depending on the news station or paper, the bias can also appear.

After this semester, I will definitely stay in the know about news.  As a Penn State student, we have the privilege to get the Centre Daily Times, the New York Times, USA Today, and the Daily Collegian at no cost! As a big supporter of the printing press, I read the newspaper daily. If physical papers aren’t your thing, every newspaper we have is available digitally along with Onward State. There is something here for every student so get reading and stay in the know!

I love your pictures that you threw in to make this article colorful. I agree with what you believe is “newsworthy”. People’s interests vary, but I also think that some stories are “newsworthy” based on their significance.

I love that Penn State offers the USA Today, NY Times, and the Daily Collegian free for students. I was never really a big newspaper reader until I came here, partly because they only paper I had access to at home was the local state paper. We are so lucky that the papers are free of charge for students, but my favorite way to get news is on my iPad. I have multiple apps the update new headlines frequently, and if I see one I think looks interesting, I read it. I could not agree with you more when you said your favorite part was all the different mediums. It’s really interesting to see what people will try to do to get your attention.

I agree with you when you said that it depends on what the person believes to be “newsworthy”. It’s completely opinionated! I too also enjoy the Daily Collegian and Onward State. It’s so easy to get caught up quickly on everything happening in Penn State I know we talked about this before but Twitter is a great way to find out news fast because it takes a second to tweet something. This can be risk though if you tweet the wrong information. Relating back to Penn State, somebody tweeted that Joe Paterno had passed away…way before he actually did!

    Great post!
