S&D (v3) Rework

Over the past few months, I have worked with Erica Kreiger to rework the User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) for the S&D (Strike and Dip) Tool (Formerly the SaD Tool). Through this process we have improved the aesthetic, functionality, and interactions of the tool’s controls and menus. In this post I will highlight some of the key changes we made to improve the program. For a comprehensive tutorial video covering all of the updated menus, windows, and functionalities in the tool, a full menus tutorial video can be found at the link below.

Unique Indie XR Experiences

As an XR developer, I am always on the lookout for new, unique, or innovative immersive experiences. I find that indie games and projects are often some of the best sources for out of the box approaches to mixed reality media. In the following post I will cover some of the indie XR experiences that I found to be unique and intriguing.

Below is a list of the indie XR games and projects I will be covering in this post.

Tutorial Video For The SaD (Strike and Dip) Tool

I created a complete tutorial guide video and a users guide document to aid users with the navigation and use of the SaD (Strike and Dip) Tool. These resources cover every element currently included in the SaD Field Map Levels, detailing what each element is as well as how to use it. I’ve also created a short tutorial video which only covers the specific steps needed to take strike and dip measurements with this tool. The tutorial guide videos, info guide document, and playable web version of an example SaD Field Map Level can be found at the following links.

Field Maps For The SaD (Strike and Dip) Tool

The most recent upgrades I’ve made to the SaD (Strike and Dip) Tool revolve around the addition of geologic field maps.

The purpose of field maps in the SaD Tool is to have the user travel to various locations around the map taking strike and dip measurements. Once all of the measurements have been taken the geologist would normally collate this data to try to build/draw a cohesive map of the stratigraphy in the area.

A playable web browser demo of an SaD Field Map can be found at the following link:

In this post I will cover the following upgrades related to these new field map levels that have been added to the SaD Tool.

VRTK/Oculus Integration Bug

I’m writing this quick blog entry as a reminder to myself and as a helpful tip for other developers who may run into a similar bug.

While integrating the “Oculus Integration” package into my Unity project I came across a frustrating set of errors/bugs related to the communication between the Oculus package and the VRTK package I already had built into the project.

Developing the SaDVR (Strike and Dip VR) Tool

In the past week I have started developing a Virtual Reality version of the SaD (Strike and Dip) Tool. For information on the development of the original version of the SaD Tool please visit the following link:

Developing the SaD (Strike and Dip) Tool

Unlike the original version of the SaD Tool, the VR version will require the user to have access to a VR headset such as the HTC Vive or the Oculus Quest. The goal of creating a VR version of the SaD Tool is to give the user a more immersive and intuitive learning experience. The hands on nature of the VR version conveys a much more authentic learning environment for the user. Below I will detail some of the elements of the SaDVR Tool, as well as explain how these features differ from those in the original SaD Tool.
