Prophylactic measures

As reference in an earlier post, there is a BRCA that can be tested for. If positive, this can raise a person’s anxiety about being diagnosed with breast cancer. Some decide to be cautious and take measures to make their chances better when it comes to developing cancer. Examples of these measures are below.

Bilateral Prophylactic Mastectomy:
Some choose to cut as much “at risk” breast tissue away as a way to prevent breast cancer developing by undergoing a bilateral mastectomy. A bilateral Mastectomy is a surgery that removes both of the breasts. Research shows that women undergoing prophylactic surgery can reduce breast cancer mortality rates by 56 percent; however, the surgery in men does not yield the same rates and is considered experimental.

Chemoprevention:
Another example of prophylactic measures is chemoprevention. Chemoprevention is the use of drugs and vitamins to delay the onset of breast cancer. There are two drugs that have been approved by the FDA to be used in prevention: tamoxifen and raloxifene. There is no current research to show the rates of breast cancer that still occurs after using these drugs for prevention.
