Signs and Symptoms

  • Lumps in the breast tissue (some lumps can be considered normal if they are found in both breasts. However, if it feels different or hard this could be a warning sign.)
  • a change in breast size or shape
  • pushing in of breast tissue and change in color (peau’ de orange)
  • itching of the breast or a rash that does not go away
  • discharge from the nipple( usually blood like or clear, do not squeeze the discharge
  • pain in certain areas of the breast (like a hot spot)

These signs and symptoms could signal breast cancer. However, there could be other reasons if experiencing them, such as fibrocystic breast disease.

  1. Fibrocystic breast disease is normally benign tumors. However, there is a chance that breast cancer is more likely to occur. Regular screening can determine the difference between cancerous tumors and simply harmless cysts

  2. Is there any connection between fibrocystic breast disease and getting breast cancer further down the line? I have fibrocystic breast disease and had a lump removed last summer, it was huge. It was very scary finding the lump and waiting for the results of my biopsy. Now I am supposed to go to a breast specialist every six months.

  3. The risk factors for men are their age (over 65 years old), family history of breast cancer, alcohol, obesity, and a history or testicular cancer. 1% of all breast cancer is diagnosed to men. Although there needs to be more research, there are studies that suggest men that work in steel mills and other hot environments have an increased risk of breast cancer.

  4. My husband goes to the MD regularly and has never had a “breast exam” and he is 47 yrs old. What are the factors and signs for increased male risks?
