Treatment

Breast cancer can be treated in a variety of ways and some forms may be combined in order to increase effectiveness.

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Medications

The goals of treatment are to promote active participation in decisions about the therapeutic plan and to alleviate post-treatment discomfort,  minimize complications, and educate.

Aside from medical intervention there are some ways that the patient can prevent and reduce the severity of breast cancer.

  • Limiting exposure to estrogen
    • Hormone replacement therapy causes high levels of estrogen which can cause breast cancer.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
    • Estrogen is stored within fat tissue.
  • Limit alcohol and avoid tobacco
    • Alcohol can alter the way a woman’s body metabolizes estrogen.
    • Smoking increases your risk for a variety of cancers.
  • Exercise regularly
    • Exercise not only maintains weight but it also balances high levels of estrogen.
