Statement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
We, the Beamforming Elevated Array for COsmic Neutrinos (BEACON) Collaboration, believe in promoting an equitable environment both within our own group and within the broader scientific community and world. We stand against racism and sexism and do not condone any discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, or ability. We acknowledge that our group is not presently representative of the broader population and we recognize the many systemic barriers in place that prevent equal access to participating in scientific endeavors and academia. We aim to build a diverse, representative, and inclusive scientific community, and we encourage initiatives and suggestions that will help us achieve those goals.
We know we can do better and commit to achieving the goals listed above by:
- Establishing a code of conduct.
- Recognizing the efforts of our collaboration members to study and support anti-racism and anti-sexist activities.
- Encouraging our members to attend conferences and other events within our scientific community that support inclusive and equitable principles.
We will review this statement annually.
Code of Conduct
As members of the BEACON collaboration, we expect that together we will build the supportive environment necessary to the advancement of scientific knowledge. Collaborators will treat each other with respect in order to create a collegial, inclusive, and professional environments.
BEACON members will employ deliberate and open processes in decisions to assign collaboration opportunities to collaboration members.
We will not tolerate any inappropriate actions or statements from our collaborators, particularly those made with respect to age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, nationality, political affiliation, ability, educational background, or any other characteristic protected by law. Harassment includes but is not limited to inappropriate or intimidating behavior and language, unwelcome jokes or comments especially with regard to the protected categories listed above, unwanted touching or attention, offensive images, photography without permission, and stalking. We encourage organizers of community events outside of our collaboration (e.g. conferences) to take active and public steps towards reducing incidents of harassment.
Violations of this code of conduct policy should be reported to at least one of the senior members of the collaboration. We anticipate an annual review of our collaboration climate and this code of conduct. Sanctions may include verbal or written warnings, disassociating offenders from the BEACON collaboration, reporting to the National Science Foundation and/or the offender’s institutional review process, and notifying relevant authorities. Retaliation for complaints of inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated. If a collaborator observes inappropriate comments or actions and personal intervention seems appropriate and safe, they should be considerate of all parties before intervening.
Inspired and using language from the Code of Conduct for APS Meetings and the Code of Conduct for the COHERENT Collaboration.
