“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” -Martin Luther King Jr.
This is the quote I am going to use for my second civic artifact. It compliments my original quote of “I Can’t Breathe” -George Floyd. It is Karotic because even though it was said in 1963, it still shows its prevalence today. Martin Luther King Jr. has ethos because everyone knows who he is, he is taught in every school (although it’s now not required in Texas), and his I Have A Dream speech is very popular that although this quote was not said during it, it proves his credibility more.
I will use this quote to further talk about the systemic racism in America and how it hasn’t changed over the past 60 years since Martin Luther King Jr. was in jail for standing up for his rights. I feel like King Jr. is not as much of a controversial character, so he can help boost the urgency and importance, and credibility of the fight for fundamental human rights for all people.
I don’t know if just this quote is enough; I might use him as a whole person, but then I don’t think that is considered a civic artifact. Maybe his “I Have A Dream” speech? I like this quote and would like to focus on it, but I am scared I might not have enough for five pages. Feel free to leave your thoughts and ideas, Thanks!
I think using the “I Have a Dream” speech as a whole would give you great content to compare and contrast. Using just that one quote would be really interesting, but since your original civic artifact is only three words, you might struggle because of the shortness of both. It would be a great opportunity to discuss the opposing argument of how MLK Jr. “solved racism,” and we have all been equal ever since. Clearly this is wrong, and it opens the floor for you to delve into systemic racism and how it is very much still occurring. Excited to see where you take this!
I think this is a great second quote, and also very karotic thinking about Texas. The injustice quote appeared in a letter that MLK wrote while in jail, perhaps you could use that as the artifact with special emphasis on that specific quote. That way you could compare how peaceful protests have not changed since 1960s and African Americans are still treated unfairly and arrested for demonstrating their right to protest.
