My understanding of what “civic” is and civic life has changed dramatically over the past couple of months of this class. I never really thought too hard about what being civic looked like. Still, since being in this class, I have learned that being civic includes helping others to help the community better, using your voice to promote what is good for the community, and continuing to improve the world around you. My blog group helped me do this by learning more about what they were taught. Being from Texas, I did not have the same education as them, so their opinions on my blogs and their blogs have helped me learn more about different things in the community. Also, our class discussions about other parts of the community have helped me know more to use my voice to promote the good things I am learning. This class is different from any English class I have ever had, so exploring more into how writing and speaking play into a political and civic setting is different and exciting. I liked listening to everyone else’s speeches because I learned more about what they are, more or less, an expert on from research. This year especially, I feel like this class is essential to have and dig deeper into the rhetoric used in a civic setting. I wish a class like this were required at high school levels because the sooner this information is used, the sooner politics and community events will be understood more by younger kids.
