Current research topics include semantic analysis of summaries and essays, educational applications of NLP, agents that learn through communication, automated summarization and summarization evaluation, dialog system strategy, discourse structure, and discourse reference. Past research topics include text forecasting (predicting real world events from text collections), fine-grained sentiment analysis, causal models from structured and unstructured data, co-reference, generation of referring expressions, and discourse deixis.
