The purpose of office hours is to allow students to meet with faculty outside of class to discuss material being presented in class, obtain advising assistance or other student-related issues. Each faculty member is expected to hold regular office hours each week during the academic year. At least 2 hours and 30 minutes per week should be scheduled, as a minimum, and preferably spread over multiple sessions (i.e., two or three different times per week to provide the best access for your students). Office hours should be posted on your office door and listed on your course syllabi with an offer to meet at other mutually convenient times, by appointment. Faculty who teach 100% online or 100% hybrid courses during a given semester are expected to communicate often and thoroughly. Thus, online faculty may have “virtual” office hours, scheduled by appointment and at times most convenient for students. Besides, online faculty may choose to conduct periodic weekly synchronous sessions that students can attend at their convenience. Online faculty should provide on their syllabi how students should seek assistance (i.e., via email, “Zoom Meeting,” or another electronic medium). Faculty who teach a mix of live/classroom instruction and online/hybrid instruction during a given semester should balance their office hours between physical office hours and virtual office hours. If, for some reason, scheduled office hours cannot be held on any given day, please inform the office staff, who will post a note on your office door notifying students and advisees that you will not be available. Faculty should also inform their students via electronic communication that office hours are canceled for a specific day and/or time. Part-time faculty should make time available to meet with students before and after class and communicate with students via email (or other electronic media), as needed. Office hour time for those teaching summer classes should total 100 minutes, preferably spread over multiple sessions. This would be approximately half of what is expected during the regular academic year. The school office will compile faculty office hours within the first week of each semester.
