Instrumentation at University Park

As part of the Penn State campus system, Penn State Behrend faculty and researchers have access to the instrumentation and labs at University Park.

Some Characterization Facilities at University Park that may be especially helpful for Behrend members include:

Materials Characterization Lab (MCL)

MCL is a shared user facility which houses a variety of characterization instruments ranging from tunneling electron microscopes (TEMs) to electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to x-ray diffraction (XRD).

Materials Research Institute (MRI)

MRI is the over-arching facility that encompasses is composed a numerous individual facilities and centers.

Institutes of Energy and the Environment (IEE)

IEE is a facility focused on solving energy and environmental challenges. Facilities within this institute include the Center for Quantitative Imaging (with microCT equipment), an organics laboratory, a radiocarbon laboratory, and a water quality laboratory.

Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D)

CIMP-3D is focused on additive manufacturing technologies, primarily for metallic systems, but also working in polymers and ceramics. This facility houses additive manufacturing and 3D printing equipment, as well as equipment for post-processing (furnaces for heat treatment) as well as instruments necessary for characterization (including polishers for sample preparation, and x-ray computer tomography, optical microscopy, and indentation instrumentation). Another focus of CIMP-3D is on the software side of things, including design, build, and analysis software.
