On Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 2-3:15 p.m. at the Metzgar Center, Dr. Richard L. Hart will share excerpts and insights from his book, “Glenhill Farm: The History of a Family Estate.”

Dr. Hart, Director Emeritus of the John M. Lilley Library at Penn State Behrend, used a study leave in 2015 to construct the text. With the assistance of the Ernst and Mary Behrend and R. Brognard Okie files in the Pennsylvania State Archives, Hart was able to piece together how the properties at the core of the Behrend campus came to be in a way that had not been explored previously.

“Glenhill Farm” provides an account of the origins of the estate that would eventually transform into the campus for Penn State Behrend.

Through a wide array of correspondence letters between Hammermill Paper founder Ernst Behrend, his wife Mary Behrend and their associates, and renowned Philadelphia architect R. Brognard Okie, Hart weaves together a detailed account of how the Behrend family estate came to be.

From the vision of the Behrends that led to the purchasing of smaller properties and land and the hiring of Okie, all the way to the finalized constructions of the unique Glenhill Farm estate, Hart tells the origin story of the Behrend campus in a more detailed manner than ever before.
