Abstract:
ILil Nas X is a chart-topping pop culture icon with a massive fanbase. However, there is far more to his success and artistry than first meets the eye. This article argues that Lil Nas X is a truly revolutionary figure, as he challenges conventions of Black masculinity, defies genre expectations of hypermasculinity and heterosexuality, actively combats the notion that the Bible justifies homophobia, and rejects respectability politics. By bringing attention to the harmful effects of respectability politics and by unapologetically expressing his sexuality, Lil Nas X demonstrates his belief in the importance of authenticity and solidarity over conformity and respectability, setting a bold example for the future of queer activism.
