Abstract:

Two distinct dental morphotypes from the extinct batoid species Meridiania convexa were recovered from the early Eocene Fishburne Formation in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Median teeth, positioned at center of the dental plate, are mesiodistally elongated, hexagonal in shape and possess a strongly convex occlusal surface. Lateral teeth, positioned along the outer region of the dental plate, also have a well-developed convex occlusal surface and are hexagonal; however, these teeth are considerably shorter than the median teeth.
