Abstract:

Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) can be categorized as an obsession with dietary habits. Even though ON is not officially considered a diagnosable eating disorder, the symptoms still affect young adults. With a lack of literature available on this phenomena, the goal of the study is to discover comorbid issues that make ON identifiable to promote the addition of it into the Diagnostic Statistics Manual Volume 5. The first hypothesis of this study assumes that an addiction to exercise will be positively correlated with symptoms of ON. The second hypothesis assumes that athletes will display higher prevalence of ON symptoms in comparison to non-athletes. The sample consists of college students that will be separated into the two groups previously mentioned. This is one of the limitations of the study, as the sample was acquired through convenience. A survey will be presented to students to collect data and a correlation and t-test will be run in IBM SPSS to analyze results. Cronbach’s alpha will be determined to show scale reliability. The prediction is that the results will yield significance and the hypotheses can be accepted at a level less than /p/ = .05.
