Tyler Stice was a 20 year old man who lived in Kingman, Arizona. He was said to be an introvert and an avid gamer, who spent most of his time playing on his computer. When Tyler wasn’t playing video games, he was working or spending time in his black Ford Mustang, which was his pride and joy. He had worked at a local furnishing company and although he had only worked there for one month, he was a good employee. Tyler also was responsible with his money as he paid his bills monthly, paid rent to his mother, and was saving up to go to college, so it was pretty rare for him to miss work.
Tyler decided to skip work on June 20, 2016 which made his mom curious and when she asked him why he decided to skip work, his response was that he wanted to take time for himself. He spent some time that day hanging out with his father and then went back into his room to continue playing video games. The following morning, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. It appeared that Tyler had packed himself lunch and left for work at around 5:30AM. It wasn’t until later in the afternoon when Tyler’s boss would call his mom Stephanie, asking where Tyler had been and why he hadn’t shown up for work for the past two days. Since Tyler’s mother thought that he had been at work, she realized something was very wrong. Stephanie attempted to track down her son by calling him several times, but had no luck as each phone call went straight to voicemail. She began asking around to see if anyone had heard from Tyler, but unfortunately no one had been in contact with him. After contacting everyone that Tyler’s mother could think of, she called the police to report Tyler missing. She was told that she would have to wait 48 hours after his disappearance in order to file a missing persons report.
On Saturday June 25, 2016, 4 days after Tyler went missing, the family had finally received some news that Tyler’s black Ford Mustang had been found at the Deer Canyon Recreational Area located in the Hualapai Mountains. The road that runs through the mountain is 46 miles long and it begins in Kingman, the town that Tyler had been living in. Although his car was found, there was no trace of Tyler. His belongings, including his laptop, wallet, keys, and cellphone were not in the car, but the exterior of his car was oddly clean, considering the fact that it had probably been out there for several days. Tyler’s camera had been left in the trunk of the car, which was also strange because his family has stated that Tyler never goes anywhere without his camera. When they looked at the photos on the memory card, Jessica, Tyler’s sister, was quick to notice that the last batch of photos that he had taken were deleted. Another odd discovery was the cup of chai tea sitting found on the passenger side of the car. Tyler did not like chai tea but the DNA results on the cup came back that it had in fact belonged to him.
After looking through surveillance footage in attempt to find Tyler, investigators had discovered that just 2 days before he went missing, Tyler purchased a 22 caliber rifle at a local Walmart and bought ammo at a second unidentified store. Tyler was not an outdoorsy person and he had also never been a fan of hunting, so why would he buy this supplies and disappear into the woods?
Search dogs had searched the premises on June 26 and searches had continued in the Hualapai Mountains for quite some time after Tyler Stice disappeared. He has not been seen since and his case remains unsolved.
Missing persons cases leave me very unsettled and leave me questioning so many things because I never understand how many people can just go missing and never return. Almost always, there is something or many suspicious things that coincide with the disappearance and nothing ever seems to make sense. This case seems like something got into Tyler with his weird behavior the days leading up to his disappearance or maybe other people were involved that caused Tyler to behave in this way. What made Tyler suddenly want to drink chai tea which he didn’t like or what was the reason he needed a rifle if he had never had a need for one in the past? It is crazy to think about how fast one’s life can change because this disappearance seems like it came out of nowhere and I feel bad for the family and friends who have to live without knowing if Tyler will ever come back or what had happened to him.
This is likely a sophomoric comment, but I’m noticing a pattern with these missing persons cases: they spend the day before they disappear doing something weird or off-schedule, and then they just drop off the grid. It’s also very odd that Tyler here disappeared for seemingly no reason. He had a plan set in action to save for college, and he was working hard. It clearly surprised his mother that he disappeared so suddenly. And it’s baffling that, with this particular case, his car wasn’t dirty, as if he had been hiding out somewhere else and had just driven it there that day. The tea is particularly confusing. I thought, when it was first mentioned, that it would be proof that someone else had been in the car with him, but apparently not! I feel like I could study Tyler’s life, what we know about him, and still have no clue where he disappeared to, or why.
