Kaltura, Penn State’s media management platform, allows faculty to host both videos they’ve created, or videos they’ve curated from YouTube in their cloud-based account. The videos are easily published to Canvas courses, where analytics reporting student viewing are available.

Machine Captioning
For instructor-created videos uploaded to Kaltura, machine captioning can be requested.
- Log onto Kaltura at Penn State’s Kaltura portal and click My Media, OR select My Media from your Canvas course menu (if you’ve enabled it in the course Settings / Navigation).
- Click the name of a video to open it in full page view.
- Expand the Actions menu below the video.
- Select Caption & Enrich.
- The option to request the machine captioning service is presented. Verify the Source Media Language (usually English) used in the video.
- Click Submit. You’ll see a notice that your caption request has been received. You’ll be notified by e-mail when the captioning request is complete.
- Return to My Media, open the video’s page, select Actions / Caption & Enrich.
- Under Existing Requests, you’ll see your recent request with the status Completed. Click the pencil icon to view and edit the captions.
- On the left of the editing page, you’ll see the results of the machine’s speech-to-text transcription of your narration. The narration is broken down into separate lines which correspond to the video’s timecode. This is how a captions file is configured, to match the narration to the timing of the visuals. Each line represents a section of text that will display on-screen during the associated time range.
- It is unlikely that your narration was auto-transcribed with complete accuracy. If you have a student in your class who requires closed captioning as an accommodation, it’s important to correct errors. In this case, 98.6% accuracy is required. Proactively correcting errors at the time you create a video is the most efficient workflow. You’re already familiar with what was said during the video, which can streamline the editing process. This will save you time in the future if a student requires accommodation. In the meantime, it provides all of your students the benefit of accurate captions.
- To verify what was said, play the video in the frame on the right side of the editing page. Review exact wording and edit as needed. Click Save as you work.
- When all errors have been corrected, review and Save.
- Return to your video’s page by clicking Back in the upper right corner of the editing page.
- You should see the CC icon in the video playbar, and be able to select and enable closed captioning. You may also see an option to display the transcript below the video, or to search the transcript.
- If you don’t see the CC icon on your play bar, return to the Actions dropdown menu and select Edit.
- Select Captions from the horizontal menu.
- Make sure that you’ve selected your captions to be used and that you’ve enabled the option to show the captions on the player.
