Submission Guide

Best of Freshman Writing relies on faculty members from across the University College to submit the outstanding student essays that they read in their first-year composition courses: Engl 15 or Engl 30.

Faculty should obtain permission from the student author before submitting. A Publishing Agreement* is signed by the student and the essay is either mailed or email to the editor.

It’s easy to submit!

  1. Identify outstanding student writing. Work with the student(s) to ensure that major grammar and spelling errors are revised prior to submission so that it will be ready to publish.
  2. Contact the student-writer to receive permission via PSU email.  Here is a sample statement:

I hereby release my essay, entitled __________________, for possible publication in Best of Freshman Writing, a website maintained by University College English Committee of Penn State University.
Though it may incorporate and/or respond to peer and instructor suggestions, I verify that the above-titled essay is my own work. I have given proper credit for the ideas and quotations I have used.

  1. Then submit the essay along with a copy of the student agreement (screenshot, photo, or saved file) to the new online submission form.

Submissions are greatly appreciated!
