Lights Outline

Narrative to tell the story

Pathos to build trust

Social Movement to find the sweet spot in our light consumption

  1. Commonplace
    • Give examples of stories or experiences surrounding lights that build trust through pathos with the audience:
      • Using flashlights as lightsabers
      • Mothers telling their children bedtime stories under a light.
  2. Make a connection with the reader through logos.
    • What to do when the eyes can’t guide the mind of the surrounding? Productivity is definitely affected, but so is safety.
  3. Big inventions brought a big change in the way we live now.
    • Use of fire
      • Cavemen and all other animals feared nature’s furious power of fire. What made our ancestors, cavemen, different from other animals is that they explored how it works. They kept exploring and eventually fire became human’s first source of light.

    • Use of candles
      • The use of candles as a source of light has been around for 5000 years. Ancient Egyptians have been seen as the oldest users of candles.
      • Though it is still on fire, it is a much more stable and reliable way to use the fire.

    • The first lamps
      • Until the 18th and 19th century, most lamps still used fire as their source of light with different fuels or different methods.
      • The whole idea of using fire as the power of light changed completely after the invention of the electric lamp in 1801 by Sir Humphrey Davy.
  4. Electricity
    • After humans found how to use electricity, they very soon realized that they don’t need to exploit the power of combustion (fire).
    • The start of light sources like the incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lights, and LEDs.
    • Green energy becomes popular and reliable by the start of the 21st century.
  5. Wealth inequality affects access to power.
    • While several rural areas around the world struggle to provide citizens with reliable power, many megacities are wasting absurd amounts of energy and causing light pollution.
      • Megacity’s consumption is way different from smaller city’s or town’s consumption.
      • Even between megacities the consumption changes drastically.
    • What’s the balance that can be found between the two?
  6. Lights have helped humans improve both at day and night and have brought shine to are ideas. Let’s use the wisdom we gained because of them to use them wisely.

  1. Good organization and topic, but try to include more complete analyses next time. This pitch should be very easily transformed into the baseline for a final project. – VP
