ME 340: Mechanical Engineering Design Methodology

Spring 2020

This class differs from many others in the mechanical engineering department because it does not focus on calculations and numerical solutions. Rather, the goal of this class is to introduce the ideology of design and how it can be applied to engineering. The bulk of this class was a team project, which set the goal of designing and building a small-scale wind turbine. The ongoing pandemic meant that we would no longer be able to build the turbine, but I still enjoyed the process of generating and refining the design. Additionally, the class placed a large emphasis on efficient teamwork and I can proudly say that our team lived up to this expectation.

ME 450: Modeling Dynamic Systems

Spring 2020

This class was interesting because it built on the ideas developed in the preceding course, which focused on mechanical vibrations. It started by developing some methods to further examine these mechanical systems. What I found truly interesting however, was that the same methods were then applied to various other disciplines, such as electrical and even fluid systems. This class helped me realize just how powerful calculus can be in the real world, regardless of what is being studied.

Other Technical Courses

Penn State has a great selection of both technical and elective curriculum, and as I look back on my time as a student I realize I have a great number of classes and professors to thank for bringing me to where I am now.
