Bin Li

Biography: Bin Li is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his B.S. degree in Electronic and Information Engineering, M.S. degree in Communication and Information Engineering, both from Xiamen University, and Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Ohio State University (OSU). He was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Coordinated Science Lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).  His research focuses on the intersection of networking, machine learning, and system development, and their applications in networking for virtual/augmented reality, mobile edge computing, mobile crowd-learning, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). He has served on the technical committees of several major conferences in networking such as ACM MobiHoc, IEEE INFOCOM, and WiOpt. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM. He received both the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award and Google Faculty Research Award in 2020, and ACM MobiHoc 2018 Best Poster Award.

  • Ph.D. and Postdoc positions available (starting Fall 2024 or Spring 2025): Dr. Bin Li constantly looks for highly self-motivated Ph.D. students and postdocs interested in research at the intersection of networking, machine learning, and system development with their applications in networking for virtual and augmented reality, edge computing, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). Students admitted to our Ph.D. program will receive full financial support through either teaching or research assistantships.   • [November 2022]: Dr. Ting He and Dr. Bin Li demonstrated virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) applications to kids at Mount Nittany Elementary School. Thanks to graduate students, Jiangong, Xinyi, and Xiaoyi, for their great help.
  • [October 2022]: Undergraduate students, Michael Artlip (EE) and Owen Sweeny (CSE), attended the National Workshop for REU Research in Networking and Systems (REUNS), which was held in Denver, and presented their demo paper “Virtual Reality-Based Gymnastics Visualization Using Real-Time Motion Capture Suit” [demo video] and “A Collaborative Augmented Reality Platform for Interactive and Immersive Education” [demo video], respectively. Both Owen and Michael worked in my lab this summer under the support of my NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) supplemental grant, and were advised by graduate students Jiangong Chen, Zhanchen Dong and me. Each of them published their first-author demo paper for the first time. Moreover, Michael and Jiangong received the Best Poster Presentation Award.
