7 August 2020:  Our collaborative research with Dr. Xueding Wang at the University of Michigan and Urology team (Drs. Joseph Clark and Jay Raman) from the Penn State Cancer Institute titled Design, development and multi-characterization of an integrated clinical transrectal ultrasound and photoacoustic device for human prostate imaging is published in a peer reviewed journal Diagnostics. Congratulations to PhD student Sumit (first author) and the team!

15 to 20 February 2020: Chris Fadden attends SPIE Medical Imaging conference and gave a podium presentation titled Thermoacoustic combined tomography of abusive head trauma. Well done Chris!

1 to 6 February 2020: Haoyang attends one of the largest conferences in the Biophotonics field, the SPIE Photonics West Conference, held in San Francisco, California. He presented a poster, interacted with international researchers, and shared his conference notes with other lab members. Great exposure for a first year PhD student!

7 January 2020: Our senior undergraduate student Kerrick Johnstonbaugh publishes first author paper titled “A Deep learning approach to photoacoustic wavefront localization in a deep-tissue medium” in IEEE TUFFC journal. Congratulations Kerrick and Sumit (co-first author) for your hard efforts in developing a novel neural network that demonstrates Deep Learning of optical scattering inside deep tissue medium can help improve the photoacoustic target localization. Well done!

25 April 2019: 

The project titled “Design, simulation and development of wearable photoacoustic hat for neonatal brain imaging” wins the 2nd Best Project award in the Capstone Senior Design Project Competition held at the Penn State. More than 100 teams sponsored by industry and academia participated in this competition. Congratulations to the senior design team (Maria Hudock, Willard Wilkinson, Salim Bin Ghouth, Donald Drawbaugh, Tiffany Adrien, and Hanan Adnan) and the lab members for their strong support to the team.

This project also won the Best Capstone Design Project of this year award from the BME Department. Congratulations again to the team. Way to go!

Sumit Agrawal (PhD student) wins best poster presentation award at the College of Engineering Research Symposium (CERS) for his work on photoacoustic imaging guided device for safer percutaneous needle operations. Congratulations to Sumit and co-authors Jason Zhang (Senior BME student), Ajay Dangi (Postdoctoral Scholar) and Neil Frings (Senior BME student).

2 Feb to 7 Feb 2019: The lab gave 5 presentations (3 podium/oral and 2 poster) at the SPIE Photonics West Conference that was held in San Francisco from 2nd Feb to 7th Feb 2019. Congratulations.

30 October 2018:

Our recent work on “Ring ultrasound transducer based miniaturized photoacoustic imaging system” received 2nd place oral presentation award at this year IEEE Sensors 2018 annual conference. This work is also invited for a full length paper.

Congratulations to Dr. Ajay Dangi and other co-authors Sumit Agrawal (Graduate Student), Jedidiah Lieberknecht (Senior Undergrad, Physics Major) and Jason Zhang (Senior Undergrad, BME Major). We thank Penn State Cancer Institute seed grant for supporting this work.

Chris Fadden’s research article “A Single Simulation Platform for Hybrid Photoacoustic and RF-acoustic Computed Tomographyis now published in the peer reviewed journal Applied Sciences. This work solves one of the long standing research problems in the filed of thermoacoustic imaging, which is to use a single simulation platform to simulate hybrid Photoacoustic tomography as well as RF-acoustic computed tomography.

It is our great pleasure to host Prof. Khaldon Lweesy, who is on one year sabbatical leave from Jordan University of Science and Technology (Irbid, Jordan). His main research interests are high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), ultrasound imaging, and biomedical signal processing.

1st May 2017: The lab receives a 3 year R00 grant funding from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) center of the National Institute of Health. Thanks to NIH for supporting our research on developing novel transrectal ultrasound and Photoacoustic imaging device for human prostate imaging and molecular imaging approaches.
