Hello everybody and welcome back,
I hope you have all enjoyed my previous blogs. So far, we have traveled 17 miles from home to the amazing Longwood Gardens and over 1,000 miles to the grand Houston, Texas. So, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about a place somewhere in the middle before heading overseas. A place in Slower Lower Delaware called Rehoboth Beach.
First, it is important to mention that I was born and raised in the great state of Delaware. Thus, I have a very special connection with Delaware. My Grandma lives in Delaware, and I spend more than 50% of my time in this amazing little state. We are commonly recognized as the first state and a tax-free state (BTW it saves a ton of money and rocks). However, many know little about Delaware besides the above, so I hope that I can offer a little more insight into Delaware specifically southern Delaware (aka Lower Slower Delaware).
To better understand some terms that I will be using, let me provide some definitions. Lower Slower Delaware refers to the beaches of Delaware. From Rehoboth to Dewey, Delaware offers a wide variety of beaches which are a blast. However, I will be talking about Rehoboth Beach during this blog because of the significance that it holds in my life.
Rehoboth Beach is a very common family destination. As a national ranked beach, many families vacation here because of the various activities offered. From the boardwalk to the beach, Rehoboth offers weeks’ worth of fun and sun. Ever since I was born, my family has vacationed here every year for a week. And, even before I was born, my parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents vacationed at Rehoboth all their lives. Thus, it has become tradition. As a result, I have garnered 18 years of memories that have profoundly affected my life, and I cannot wait to tell you all about them.
First, let’s talk about the main reason for beach trips: the beach. The beach is a very special place for me. Obviously, it is a place that I can relax, sunbathe, and have a lot of fun, but it is also a place where I can talk and connect with my family. As mentioned in my previous blog, I only see my extended family one time a year, and beach week is that time. Furthermore, family is extremely important to me, so this week is very significant. The beach is the place where many stories and catching-up occur. My favorite thing is sitting on the beach and talking about what happened in our lives over the previous year. I love learning new things about my family whether their passions, interests, or experiences.
Nonetheless, I do love the cliché aspects of the beach. One of my favorite things about Delaware beaches are the waves. The waves are huge. From boogie-boarding to wiping out, it is a blast. My favorite memory is when my former pro-football uncle was boogie-boarding and wiped out an old lady on the beach. We, also, love simply wading in the water for hours just talking and splashing.
After all the swimming, my family and I need some serious grub, and Rehoboth offers some of the best boardwalk food in the galaxy. From Grotto’s pizza to Thrashers’ French fries to hoagies, there is nothing better on Earth than eating these on the beach. As I am writing this, I am salivating over the amazing food. In addition to the food, we have our favorite ice cream shop which houses over 300+ flavors. From bacon ice cream to the world’s hottest ice cream, they have it all. My favorite is a booger which is an ice cream take on boogers. It has green snot and green ice cream that truly looks like boogers. Overall, the food is one of the best things about Rehoboth.
Finally, my cousins and I love Funland. Funland is a small boardwalk amusement park. Since the age of 2, I have been riding all the rides. From the carousel to the frogger, I can remember every ride. Now, I have progressed to the big kid rides like the Gravitron, Sea Dragon, and Haunted House. Every year, I continue to go to Funland. I ride the rides, play the games, and just laugh and have fun. It is tradition to sit on the back of the Sea Dragon and win the biggest prize at the water gun machine game. Even as an adult, I continue to scream on the rides and jump with joy as I win a boardwalk game. It just feels great to be a kid again!
Overall, Rehoboth beach is the place where I connect with my extended family. I look forward to this time every year because of my love for family. In addition, I know that many memories will be created that will last a life time. The laughs and fun are the best feelings in the world. I can’t wait to go back.
