What: Kicking off the semester with our first General Body Meeting! Come out for an introduction to the club, meet your peers in BME, and hear about the events we have planned for the semester.
President
Mikayla Roach
Mikayla is halfway through her third year in the biomaterials option of Biomedical Engineering. During her freshman year, she conducted research on the fabrication of pure starch by electrospinning and the cross-linking of plasticized thermoplastic starch. Over the summer following her freshman year, Mikayla researched coaxial electrospinning for the loading of drugs, proteins, and genes onto fiber scaffolds at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). January – July 2020, Mikayla had a co-op with Johnson & Johnson working on the product performance evaluation of medical devices. She is currently doing research on infectious diseases in African infants; exploring the causes, predicting where and when outbreaks will occur, and linking malnutrition to infectious diseases. This past summer she conducted research at Rutgers working on displaying capillary action in 3D printed bone implants. During her freshman year, she served as the service chair for BMES. She was the treasurer during her sophomore year. Last year she was the president and will continue serving this year. Outside of BMES Mikayla is the treasurer of the Happy Valley Christian Community, the Director of Events for the Engineering Undergraduate Council, a Millennium Scholar, a member of the Presidential Leadership Academy, and part of the Schreyer Honors College. This year she hopes to help each member expand their network. She is excited for another great year!

Vice President
Ariane Tsai
Ariane is a senior studying biomedical engineering in the biomaterials option. She started out as a computer science major. After her internship after freshman year, she discovered her love for research and the medical field. Since then, she has been an undergraduate researcher in the tendon multiscale biomechanics and mechanobiology lab doing research on improving ACL reconstruction surgery. Besides research, she is also a member of the Penn State Equestrian Team, a facilitated study group leader in the Women in Engineering Program (WEP), and a head mentor for the Engineering Orientation Network (EON). Ariane was the Treasurer last year in the club and will be the Vice President this school year. She is looking forward to the BMentor/BMentee program again this semester and hopes everyone will have tons of fun in the club!

Secretary
Arantza Ruiz
Arantza is a third-year student in Biomedical Engineering (Biochemical Option) and pursuing a minor in French and Francophone Studies. She is from Mexico City and her current hometown is Fort Collins, CO. This year, she will be the Secretary for the Penn State Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and her duty is to maintain effective communication for the organization. Outside of BMES, she is also an active member of Phi Sigma Rho Sorority, a Schreyer Scholar Ambassador, and a member of the Women in Engineering Program (WEP). In her free time, she likes to read, watch good movies, crochet, bake, and spend time with family and friends. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Treasurer
Aryath Narayanamangalam
Ary is a third-year majoring in biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering from Philadelphia, PA. Other than serving as the treasurer for BMES, Ary is also the President of the Schreyer Student Council, a member of the Penn State Presidential Leadership Academy, an undergraduate researcher in the Musculoskeletal Regenerative Engineering Lab, and an orientation mentor for SHOTIME. Down the road, he hopes to be a prosthetist and make highly integrated artificial limbs for those that need them. Outside of school, you can most likely find him playing his heart out in a game of soccer or ultimate frisbee, jamming out to lo-fi or EDM music, or just taking random long trips with friends.

Webmaster
Sybil Owusu-Bempah
Sybil is a junior in the biomaterials option of Biomedical Engineering. She is heavily involved on campus as a Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) mentor, Membership Chair for the African Students Association (ASA), Facilitator for the College of Engineering Diversity Roundtable, an Undergraduate Researcher at the Biological and Robotics Intelligent Fluid Locomotion Lab, a McNair Scholar and Bible study leader in The Light Fellowship. Over the summer following her freshman year she was not only a Robotics Program Assistant for the Engineering Summer Bridge Program but also a Design Assistant for the Multicultural Engineering Program Orientation (MEPO) – She worked alongside the Applied Research Laboratory to design and direct a completely virtual robotics competition for 30 incoming freshmen to Pennsylvania State University. She taught these students CAD software and how to utilize the engineering design process to build their robots. Additionally, she guided the students on how to write a design report while thinking critically, urging them to practice teamwork and develop professional skills. This academic year she hopes to improve BMES’ social media presence and many more.
