Our Open Lab Model

Penn State Behrend uses an Open Lab Model to help connect students, faculty, and industry partners in a collaborative way. Unlike a traditional classroom or lab, Behrend's Open Labs are designed to be cross-disciplinary workspaces in which students can gain hands-on experience and solve real-world problems. We work directly with local businesses, creative groups, and non-profits, so our projects address real community needs, all while allowing our students to gain valuable work experience. Faculty members guide this work as mentors, while industry partners bring in challenges and opportunities for our students.

Here at BOLD-C we use Penn State Behrend's Open Lab Model to support our media productions by allowing students:

  • Hands-On Production: Students gain access to professional-level film, photography, and digital media tools, from cinema cameras to 3D printers, and are able to learn by using them on real projects.
  • Industry Engagement: Students at BOLD-C partner with local filmmakers, artists, and production companies, giving students opportunities to work alongside professionals and build connections within their industries.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Work: While most of our students are focused on media and arts, BOLD-C collaborates with engineering, business, and humanities students, making it a hub for interdisciplinary creativity.
  • Student Empowerment: Students don't just follow instructions, they take leadership roles by directing shoots, managing equipment check-outs and running production,

We were originally known as Greater Erie Arts Rental (G.E.A.R.), but now, as BOLD-C, we are focused on an open lab-based cinematic production experience. Our priority is facilitating student experience with all levels of cinematic production, and connecting our students with the community in the pursuit of creating collaborative digital art.
