Hi everyone! Today I am going to be reviewing my all time favorite comedy series, Gilmore Girls! I already explained the synopsis of the show in my first blog post, but I’ll briefly cover it again in case you missed it. Disclaimer: this post contains spoilers of the S1Ep1!
The show follows the lives of single mother Lorelai Gilmore and her teenage daughter, Rory. After getting pregnant in high school, Lorelai runs away from her old-money parents, Richard and Emily, who want her to marry Rory’s father in order to keep up appearances. Lorelai raises Rory on her in the fictional Stars Hallow while also managing The Independence Inn. Lorelai and Rory are content living away from the high society life that Lorelai’s parents live, until one day Lorelai finds herself in need of a big favor; she needs help paying for Rory’s private school education at Chilton Academy. Although Lorelai prides herself on being independent and self-sufficient, she puts her stubborn ego aside for Rory’s sake. It’s especially important that Rory is able to go to Chilton because aspires to one day go to Harvard.
Luckily, Richard and Emily agree to lend Lorelai the money, but on one condition; both Rory and Lorelai must come to weekly Friday night dinners at their house. Almost every episode of the show includes one of these dinners. Other common themes in the show include Rory and Lorelai’s involvement in Stars Hallow community events, Rory’s experiences at Chilton, and lots of drama surrounding both main characters’ love lives and other relationships.
One of my favorite things about the show is the fast-paced, witty dialogue which includes TONS of pop culture references. As was true for the West Wing, I did find myself having to look some of these references up online, but I didn’t think it interfered with my enjoyment of the show. Gilmore Girls also has great aesthetic value; the scenes in Stars Hallow give major fall vibes, making it the perfect show to start watching RIGHT NOW! I personally am enjoying my yearly rewatch as I type this! Gilmore Girls is also a great show to unwind to, as the plots are usually not high-stakes and the scenery is fairly peaceful.
I will say that as the show goes on, there’s definitely reasons to be mad at some of the main characters. I don’t want to spoil anything for you all, but trust me when I tell you that you will experience second-hand embarrassment A LOT in the later seasons. In my opinion, this makes the characters seem more human and relatable, which makes the show more interesting to watch.
If you’re looking for a good comedy to watch this fall, Gilmore Girls can’t be beat!
Yes!! Gilmore Girls is such a comfort show, and as fall rolls around I find myself wanting to curl up and watch it. I honestly lost interest in the plot and characters as the seasons progressed, but this makes me want to get back into it!
I think you just convinced me to finally watch this show. My sister and her best friend both love it and swear by it. I have heard Rory’s voice and it makes me so angry but I will suck it up for the sake of the fall aesthetic. I can’t wait to see what show you review next!
I love love love Gilmore Girls and I’ve binged it so many times. Reading this blog is just fueling me to rewatch it again, especially cause Fall is creeping around the corner.
As someone who hasn’t seen the show the concept sounds interesting and I’m excited for more blog posts about further episodes. The one aspect I like is the weekly dinners and I’m excited to see how those progress throughout the series. I imagine they will start cold and awkward but grow into more friendly interaction.
