Vice Presidential Debate: Live Blog

9:26 – VP Biden mentioned the 47%, arguing that that 47% includes his own parents, the elderly, and the armed forces. He’s tired of the wealthy not taking their responsibilities. Ryan responded strongly with a statistic about the Scranton unemployment rate rising to 10% from 8.5% since Obama came into power. Real recovery, he argues, is not 15% living in poverty. He wants to help people get skills they need and make more products in America so we can sell overseas. Ryan employs pathos by discussing how Romney gives his time, and 30% of his income to charity; he cares about 100% of Americans. Biden returns that story with his own personal one about the deaths of his wife and daughter.

9:37 – Ryan is appealing to the younger generation by promising them Social Security benefits when they reach their retirement. Biden responds and looks directly at the camera to talk specifically to those benefitting from the current Social Security plan.

9:45 – Ryan is accusing Biden of trying to scare people away from voting for Romney.

9:52 – The moderator seems very skeptical of Ryan’s plans and seems favor Vice President Biden. It’s like she’s on his side rather than being nonpartisan.

9:54 – I’m trying to be the Independent registered voter that I am, but the fact that I come from a very conservative family is definitely influencing me. I can’t decide whether Biden is getting on my nerves because I don’t like him or because I’ve never heard anything positive about him from my family.

10:01 – How does shrinking the military seem like a good idea? I feel like that makes us more susceptible to an attack.

10:05 – Biden has a wide array of hand gestures. Sometimes it makes him believable, other times he looks foolish.

10:16 – This is the first time two Catholic candidates have been in a VP debate. This is particularly interesting for me as a practicing Catholic. I agree with everything Ryan has said about abortion and religion because it’s what I believe as a Catholic.
