Let’s be honest, we all eavesdrop on the conversations of those around us. Even if you don’t like to admit it, when you hear something interesting or intriguing said by someone in that group of people walking in front of you as you walk past the HUB, you just can’t help but lean in a little closer to catch a snippet of what they say next. So, instead of pretending like I don’t listen in to conversations I was by no stretch invited to participate in, I decided this semester to embrace it. Welcome to my blog, where I’ll be taking the weirdest, funniest, most interesting, or most difficult to explain things that I’ve heard each week and providing them to you with absolutely no context. When it comes to figuring out why exactly each thing was said, your guess is as good as mine.
Let’s start off with something I heard not in a large crowd of people at a busy spot of campus, but rather in the lobby of my very own building. I had rolled out of bed half an hour ago on this particularly freezing Wednesday morning, and was headed to my 9 am class (which happens to be CAS 138) when, from the large group of guys walking out the door in front of me, I heard it:
“Dude, gloves are like, the move in the mornings.”
For those of you unfamiliar with what exactly “the move” even means, allow urban dictionary to enlighten you:
We’ll use definition number one (“Used as an exclamation of a particularly pleasing situation.”) for the purposes of this blog post, and if you’re still unclear about what it means, it can pretty much be summed up as a way to say that whatever you are referring to is the way to go, the best option, a great idea, etc. I think you get the picture.
Anyway, now that you understand what he was saying, maybe you can try and help me understand why he was saying it. First of all, I was unaware that the choice to wear gloves when it’s (a) seven degrees outside and (b) a necessity to shower at night because otherwise my hair will literally freeze on my way to class in the morning, was a new or innovative idea. See, I’m amazed I even heard and saw the kid say it because, in addition to the two layers I had under my huge winter coat, I was so bundled in a hat and scarf that both my peripheral vision and ability to hear were severely compromised. Up until that point, I thought gloves were kind of a given. But that’s not even what perplexes me the most. What I truly don’t think I’ll ever understand is, and prepare yourself now because I know you won’t be able to believe it either, HE WAS NOT WEARING GLOVES. There he was, selling all his buddies on the exciting possibility of warm hands, and he wasn’t even taking advantage of them himself! If only he had taken the knowledge he’d acquired and put it into practical use. Unfortunately, he is just one of many I’ve seen fall victim to a Central PA winter without adequate outerwear. I can only hope that next week he’ll discover the wonder of wool socks.
This is hilarious! I am a frequent user of “the move” though I can’t say I’ve ever used it like this. I really enjoyed your post, and I also really enjoy listening to the things people say that make no sense, so I’m glad it’s embodied in a blog post. This is a unique idea, I’m excited to read more!
I love this blog idea! We’re all inherently very curious about other people’s business, or at least I know I am. Some of the most interesting conversations I’ve ever heard I have heard just walking around campus. Not gonna lie some weird people go to Penn State. I think this blog is hilarious and can’t wait to see what other conversations you pick up.
I really enjoyed reading this blog, and think that it is a great idea. I especially liked the tone that you wrote with, which really gave life to your topic and made it a fun read.
I think this is a really good idea for a passion blog. I’m definitely going to have to come back to check this out. If you hear half the things I hear while eavesdropping on any given day, I know you’ll have a lot more hilarious posts on the way!
I love this blog! Like you, I also like to be “that person” who eavesdrops on the conversations around me whenever I’m walking through campus. You truly can find out some remarkable things if you happen to be passing by the right person at the right time. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what else you hear as you walk through campus in the near future!
This is an amazing idea! As a fellow curious human being, eaves-dropping and people watching are the best things in life. This is hilarious! And you wrote it with humor and were still thorough.
I really enjoyed reading this! After reading the post I can tell this blog has some potential, it’s gonna be funny and informative! Keep up the good work!
