Hello! Welcome back to my blog where each week I talk about a different TV show/movie I think carries an important message. This week, I’ve decided to cover Atypical. The hit Netflix show Atypical has 4 seasons, and stars Keir Gilchrist as its main character, Sam Gardner.
Atypical follows Sam, a teenager on the Autism spectrum, and his family which includes his protective mother, wavering father, and rebellious sister. During the initial season of the show, Sam’s family accompanies him in his journey to find love as a high school senior. As seasons go on, Atypical explores the lives of not only Sam and his family, but his friends as well. The show explores what it’s like to be “atypical” as a teenager with Autism in a world full of “typical” people. Atypical is lighthearted, funny, and heartwarming.
I would argue that there are many important messages in Atypical. Firstly, that no one is “normal”. As the show details the lives of Sam’s loved ones alongside Sam, it is quickly revealed that everyone has their unique issues, strengths, and paths that they wish to follow. I love that the show emphasizes individuality in this way because it is very comforting for the audience. Another message in Atypical is family bonds. Sam’s family experiences some bumps in the road, and this has affected their dynamic since Sam’s diagnosis as a child. The show demonstrates, through Sam’s family, the strength and support of family bonds.
Lastly, Atypical shines a new light on Autism. Many people in our country are aware of Autism Spectrum Disorder, but are not personally connected to it (as in a family member or friend is on the spectrum). Atypical offers a raw perspective on the obstacles a child and teenager with Autism have to face every single day, and I think the show brings great awareness to these issues. Not only that, but you grow to love and understand Sam. This quality encourages the audience to stand up for those with Autism, and provide them with that personal connection they may not have previously had.
Overall, Atypical is an amazing show that I have watched and rewatched. It makes me laugh, cry, and leaves me better understanding those with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their challenges. I definitely recommend watching!
