Things to bring from Bangladesh

Nov 2, 2019

Almost everything is available here, even though price would double of what you had in Bangladesh. That’s why initially to cut cost, you might want to bring stuffs you find necessary. But later, you will get used to buying everything from around here.

You can go to Walmart, Wegmans, Giant, Trader’s Joe for grocery shopping/ shopping for daily necessities. Walmart is the cheapest option. All of them are within a 10-20 minutes ride (depending on where you live) with a CATA bus of V route.

Things you won’t find in Walmart for the cheapest price, and can bring from Bangladesh:

  1. Good spices: There are Indian shops for them, but you will find them very expensive at first. If you want to save and are particular about the taste of deshi spices, you can bring Holud, Morich, Jeera, Dhoniya, Ghee, Achar etc. from home.
  2. Ethnic dresses, jewelry, sandals: You can bring sari/ salwar kameez/ ethnic jewelry / decorative sandals / panjabi etc, but do not bring too much. You will only be able to wear them in Bangladeshi gatherings, otherwise it is hard to find occasions to wear them.
  3. Bed sheets/pillow cover: If you miss the hand-crafted designed bedsheets of Bangladesh, bring them. You won’t find similar designs here. Same goes for any other decorative pieces where you want the Bangladeshi artistic touch.
  4. Special type of pots/pans for cooking: You can check Walmart or Amazon page if they have the particular type of kitchenware you are used to. Bringing one or two is not a bad idea if you have space in your luggage, as the good quality kitchenwares are expensive here. But you can always buy the cheaper brands.
  5. Stationeries: Pens/pencils and notebooks with white sheets, clear bags : They don’t have the notebooks like the ones in Bangladesh.
  6. Clothing: Bring a few to last the first few months. After that, you won’t mind spending a few bucks to buy clothes that go with the fashion trend here. Also, watch out for the clothing sales. Do not bring any winter clothes from Bangladesh, as those are not suited for the extreme cold here. You can bring flip-flops for summer.
  7. Take caution when bringing electronic devices. Not all of them will work at the power rating here. Bring converter if you have them already, otherwise you can buy them here.
