Terrorist attacks and mass shooting are commonly thought of as being the same act of violence. However, there is a distinct difference since within a mass shooting there is commonly only one deranged shooter. But in a terrorist attack, there can be countless attackers since they are a organization. In the after math of terrorist attacks, many words are thrown around like mastermind. The public craves the justice of the mastermind but in all reality they are simply the menial organizers who tell the attackers where and when to attack. This provides a what Jack Shafer calls false comfort in which we pretend that the simple organizer is actually an evil genius.  This also allows the public to regain their senses since terror causes us to lose our senses, which is what the terrorists hope to do. An incident of this, is when everyone says that the newest terrorist attacks is unprecedented and new. However, the public is simply forgetting all other attracts that have happened and are unaware that the “new” means of attack were actually with in the capability of the terrorists.  With the Paris attack, everyone was stating that this was un heard of and so sudden but in reality they had the capability to strike there. This is underestimate this but we also overestimate them, and in turn making them seem stronger and more powerful. While the media tries to cover the attacks, they do a poor job by filling in air time with unqualified “experts”. This has greatly changed my view on my view point of terrorists can do and how safe I truly am.

Throughout the world, there are hundreds if not thousands of different estuaries, bodies of water where salt and fresh water meet. This combination creates a unique ecosystem that cannot be found anywhere else. However, this unique ecosystem is in danger of being destroyed through mass pollution of the Earth.  One ecosystem in particular is the Chesapeake Bay Estuary located in Maryland. This estuary is feed with fresh water through the Chesapeake Bay Water and the salt water through the Atlantic Ocean.  Notable in this ecosystem is the blue crab, a delicacy throughout the United States. However, this estuary is under attack, like all other estuaries, by the epidemic of pollution. The main weapon for pollution in this battle against the estuary is algal blooms. These are high concentrations of algal in a specific area of the water, blocking out all sun light. This sun light is vital to the growth and development of vital plants for other aquatic life.

From the beginning of the human race pollution has always been a factor that we had to live with. The earliest form of pollution came from the first wood burning fires, however the levels of pollution is insignificant. Pollution dramatically started to rise as we switched from a nomadic life style to a civilized one. Throughout ancient times and the middle ages, smelters and blacksmiths would pollute the air with harmful coal smoke. It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that the levels sky rocketed. With the unregulated burning and dumping of chemicals the Earth was taking a beating. World War Two increased the force of those “punches” through the invention of plastics and pesticides. Both of these are relatively harmless to use but once used up take hundreds of years to decompose causing even more pollution. This epidemic is so bad that in 50 years we have been able to pollute the oceans so much that plastic makes up roughly 40% of surface area. Over time the ocean will break up the plastic, causing it to become more susceptible to being eaten by a sea creature. This fact also means that a simple one-liter bottle can be broken down so that every mile of coast in the world will have part of it on there. This is only one factor that is causing the quick death of our home and planet, Earth.

In 1970 it was decided that we needed an intervention to change this mind set, to set forth a better plan to bring about a better planet. To do this they created the first earth day and in that same year created the recycling symbol. Thousands of college students submitted designs for the symbol but Gary Dean Anderson’s was chosen. In its simplistic form it is three arrows in a triangle, each bending at 45 degrees in the middle. These three triangles are placed end to end to form the iconic triangle. This triangle symbolizes the never ending cycle of recycling and reusing.

Three Civil Artifacts

cellphones

This artifact is responding to the ever growing ago of technology and how it has started to consume many lives, mainly young adults and children.  This is necessary since through enforcing this policy of no cell phones, those that are consumed by this technology benefits since they now can look around and truly appreciate what’s around them.  The people who enforces this policy are mainly those who care about the welfare of the future humans and various other reasons. In the past this was not such a relevant problem but with the advancement of smart phones this problem continuously grew to the point of addiction.  To some like the old fashioned, cell phones are not necessary subsequently allowing them to not believe that this sign is useful to them. However, to some young adults that are concise about their cellphone use, this sign might talk to them and help them put their phone down.

spacex

With the new technological age on the horizon, a company leading this change is SpaceX. This company, created by Elon Musk, is revolutionizing the way people think of space travel. They are not like Virgin Galactic, a private space travel company, but actually a company that will get supplies for the ISS and other venters into space. Previously rockets were a one-time use machine. However, SpaceX is changing rocket designs by having a reusable rocket that lands vertically! This new design will be able to not only revolutionize the space industry but also cheapen space travel.

swastica

The Nazi swastika was thought to be taken from the Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism sacred symbols. To these religions it it a sign of prosperity and food fortune, however whenever it is associated with the Nazi’s it is thought of as being evil and horrific. Subsequently to different groups of people it has different meaning, and it also shows that throughout the century the meaning of this symbol has greatly changed.
