Particle-laden turbulence and biological propulsion

New paper in JEB

Our new paper in the Journal of Experimental Biology was a long time in the making!  Based on data collected in 2013 at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs, this paper shows that the shiner surfperch Cymatogaster aggregata paradoxically consumes less oxygen when swimming in a high-turbulence flow (compared to a low-turbulence flow).  Check it out at http://jeb.biologists.org/content/early/2018/03/29/jeb.168773!
