I really enjoyed the movie “Shattered Glass.” From the beginning, Steven seemed like he had something to hide. His co-workers would tell him several times that he has a call, and he would just ignore it essentially. Even though I knew the ending, the whole time Steve came off as a weird person.
I thought it was amazing how he was able to make up so many stories and get away with it for so long. It is almost impressive actually. He was so elaborate about his lies to. For instance, he wouldn’t just lie, he had this whole background to go along with it, like phone numbers and even a website.
I think what he did was pretty dangerous too. He started off the movie saying how The New Republic is on Air Force One and it has the power to influence people in Congress. If that is true, then his fabricated stories could have influenced political decisions. Those decisions could have been based or been controlled by stories that didn’t even happen.
What Glass did was immoral and ethically wrong. He started with one lie and then kept lying in order to stay out of trouble. Eventually his lies caught up to him and even at that point when he knew he had been caught he continued to deny the allegations. By the time he was fired, I couldn’t believe a single word he said. He claimed that he might do something like hurt himself, but I couldn’t even believe that he would. I felt bad for him, but at the same time he lied and got what he deserved.
Overall, I thought “Shattered Glass” was a good movie and definitely opened my eyes to the seriousness of checking your sources and telling the truth. Steven Glass will forever have the label of being a liar tagged to him. That is certainly a label I do not want to have.
