Taking this course opened my eyes to so many different issues going on in the world. My mother was really upset when I changed my major to journalism. She believed that you don’t have to be trained to be a journalist and she had me believing the same thing. After taking this class I now see that a journalist has one of the most important jobs in the world. In the digital age we live in today without trained journalist it would be almost impossible to get accurate information out to the world.
I liked how we discussed so many different topics such as privacy and graphic images and the ethical issues behind them. Watching the film Shattered Glass was one of the best ways to start off the semester because honestly I never knew how serious and how common plagiarism was in the print industry. This class is an important core class for journalism majors because being a journalist you have a daily struggle with whether or not something is ethical. Making one wrong desicion might change the whole course of your carrer. Maybe if Stephen Glass would have taken a class like this he would have thought twice about his actions. One of my favorite things about taking this course with Dr. Z is the fact that we did blog posts that was available for anyone to view. It is so much easier to manage the work when you don’t have homework every single night. I honestly don’t think that there is anything negative that I have to say about the class because every single time I went to class I learned something new and I loved how our professor lectured but also engaged students by asking questions.
Overall, this was my favorite class this semester and I would change anything about it. I will take all the principles that I have learned in this class and apply them to my future profession.
