Blog 5- Kelsey Santo

Reflections on this course:

Throughout this course I have learned many concepts regarding media ethics within journalism. The main one that stood out to me was conflict of interest. Besides that another one that comes to mind is invasion of privacy. This also related to the case study, which talked about invasion of privacy during rape sensitive cases. Within this case they talked about how the journalist leaked the name of the victim with the rapists in the same article.

This was something that impressed me but not in a good way. It believe that the victims names should stay private, with such an emotional time that they are going through getting bombarded with journalist and people from your community is not needed. They also talked about the fact that what if the victim lying, would it still be able to release the name since then the people who were accused would become the victims? These were questions that stood with me way after the presentation ended. I think they stood with me because sensitive issues like these are things that journalist have to deal with. This case and topic made me realize the pressure that journalist have and also made me appreciate them more.

I believe that this course actually did have a large impact not only on my appreciation of media ethics in journalism, but also helped me write blogs or research papers efficiently and with the ability to intertwine references correctly. Along with references I also learned how to properly use the Penn State library database. This was something that I know will come in handy in the future. In my career of marketing and sales I know that I will have to be able to appropriately find references and accurately use them in my work and research. I can also see how being able to write a research project and blogs can help give me practice.

My overall reflection from this course was it was very interesting and able to give me a good insight into media ethics in journalism. I do feel that the quizzes were not clearly explained as well and would have likes to have some sort to guide to know what exactly what was going to be on them more the just the chapter number. Besides that I think the group project was fun and informative. As well as I believe that the information in the course is actually very informative and something that every communications major should be required to learn about.
